E60/E39/Maserati Sunday Sprint and Exhaust Update

A fine Sunday afternoon called for a spirited drive. Jason (JCrist) brought his highly modified and very fast e39 M5 from Lynchburg, Robert (Rodman31) came with his Silverstone e60 from northern Virginia, Tony (rvam5) left his e39 at home and instead brought his Maserati Coupe. Ahh, decisions, decisions. I joined with my silver grey e60 with the recently installed Supersprint Race.

Interesting videos should be forthcoming courtesy of Robert. Believe me, they should be well worth the wait. For now, content yourselves with these photos.

A few observations:

(1) The chicks dig the Maserati. More than once did someone approach us and ask about Tony's car. The Oldsmobuicks accompanying it apparently failed to stir the onlookers' loins.

(2) Silverstone is a terrific color. It is much more than just a silver. Some of the photos should help those trying to decide between silverstone and silver grey.

(3) Aftermarket exhausts are plain fun. Jason's Tubi is a perfect complement to his aggressive e39. The Tubi on Tony's Maserati makes epic sounds. I continue to be very, very pleased with the Supersprint Race.

(4) These cars are meant to be driven. We swallowed straights, glided through corners, and put dotted yellow lines to good use. It was remarkable how often four cars were able to make safe passes together on a largely winding two-lane. If you have not participated in a drive with friends with similar interests, do it soon.

(5) Jason is an absolute badass as a caravan leader (see photo of HUD display with Jason's car visible in the lead), thanks to various countermeasures and oversized cohones.

Thanks, guys. I look forward to the next one, and eagerly await Robert's videos.

Roman

As much as I like the E39M5 as a car it really seems a bit dated in looks compared to the MasQP and specially the E60.
It sure does look dated. It even feels dated after driving Roman's E60......
BUT......It feels like a racecar, handles like a racecar, and sounds like a racecar!
There are alot of us that haven't quite embraced the high-beltline and high tenor pitched exhaust of the E60...........yet. It is defintely growing on me. The E39 will make just a good a classic as the E28 and 34 that we VA'ians had the pleasure of viewing wonderfully restored examples at our last meet.
In my opinion, if the industry experts and Roundel folks spent more time on the road with the E60, they might give it more of a break.

Yes, but there is no Joe Walsh song that goes "My BMW does 205."

Sounds like you guys had fun...

About the Maserati...I had one and loved it. The Tubi on that car is absolutely frickin' ridiculous. The Eisenmann race is loud as hell but it doesn't make the sounds that the 'Rati does with Tubi. The memories... :)

OK,OK,OK, the video is coming!!!

I have a little more editing and then I will post it. The sound came out really good I think. Jason the clip of you peeling out is awesome, you leave 2 very good "chirps". Anyway, some pics until later.
I couldn't keep my foot off the floor board the whole way home, what a ride!!!

The sound is more subtle inside the cabin, we were giving you the everyday drive sound. SuperSprint is much more deeper in tone than the Eisenmann and more managable for everyday driving in my view after this run.

OK this next video is of Jason's E39 M5 w/Tubi exhaust and Dinan S2 suspension, UUC chip and so forth. Thanks for dinner Jason!!!

I must add this was one of the best days I have had in a while just enjoying my car and the company of some really genuine people!! What a GREAT DAY!!
At one point we went thru a tunnel in Williamsburg and the sound was incredible!!!!!!!:M5thumbs: :applause:

Great Video Robert!
The last pass, from right to left, was at about 110mph! The video almost looks like it is edited sped up! :M5rev:

I'm glad the exhuast isn't "loud", I am very pleased with the sound outside of the car.

The video stops at a great spot, showing the pitch of the car and the suspension! Great job and thanks a million!

:M5launch: <~~~~~~you know I mean it!

A moment of silence, please, for the turtle that paid the ultimate price for my enjoyment. He popped up out from underneath Robert's e60 at about 90 mph.
Man, we killed some bugs yesterday.
Thanks for dinner at the Leafe, Jason.
Looking forward to the next event - hopefully we can organize a cruise through wine country and see some beautiful fall colors soon. Let's get the map going.
Roman and Robert, thanks for organizing the event and bringing the equipment to record the fun!

The true magic that our cars enable us to conjure up is reflected well in your fine pictures. It is great to see you guys savoring the machines, the roads, and the camraderie!

Sounds nice. Def lower tone/grumble than the Eisenmann. MUCH more subtle too. Doesn't sound too much different than stock from the inside from what I can tell.
The SS Race sounds markedly different from stock (1) at idle, (2) in city cruising up to 50 or so mph, and (3) whenever dipping into the throttle aggressively regardless of speed. You and Robert are absolutely correct that the sound is much deeper than the Eisenmann. It reaches a higher pitch at higher rpms -- similar to the stock setup but only louder and more aggressive. Highway cruising is very close to stock. This is exactly the balance for which I was aiming. It may be too much for some and too little for others. (The vast improvement in idle makes the change worthwhile for me by itself.) The videos should help with decisions and we are all fortunate to have several excellent options that fit various tastes.

Does the SS Race tone change with mileage?

I've had my SS Race on for only a few miles now, but it seems to be getting smoother, deeper and a bit louder. It may all be in my head (or as the case may be, my ears), but I've experienced similar changes in tone after break-in with other exhaust systems. All-in-all, a great sounding exhaust system that I am very happy with.

Any others hearing a change?

:haha:

I understand that a new exhaust typically does change in sound, but after several hundred miles. I have a few hundred on mine and have noticed a very slight difference. I absolutely love the idle and low-RPM sound especially -- it now has the "I mean business" sound to go along with the "I mean business" capability and appearance.
