SMG Problems - Who's had problems after the replacement?

Just curious to see who has had additional problems with the same failure after BMW replaced the SMG. It's not really acceptable that people are getting red cogs and having their cars shut themselves down, but it would be almost inconceivable if they're replacing the units with the same part/revision number and they end up failiing again.

I've asked about the possibility of gettng my deposit back for my M5, but I have to decided soon as I was scheduled to pick it up later this month. I want the car, but this board has sent up a huge number of red flags about it.

This is the place where you will hear about all the problems. There are a lot of good things as well and many owners who have a trouble free experience. It is a great car, let down for the main part by a piece of crap transmission.

BTW, I'm on gearbox number three - my story again for those who don't know:

Now I'm furious!! - the weekend from HELL

I can sympothize with you, I had an '03 745iL that was a POS. It was so bad that I broke the lease early with a $10k bloodbath. I said that I would NEVER buy a BMW again.

Somehow I managed to find my way to a BMW dealer last winter to look for a replacement for my wife's Lexus Sc430 which was also a POS to a lesser extent & found an IB M5 setting next to the 550i demonstrator I was about to take out. (BTW, she loved the 745iL; I was the one who took it in for repairs) Well, I asked the salesman a little about the M5 & decided to drive it instead of the 550i. Of course, I came home with the M5 after driving it.

The wife let me have the M5 & she took the Lexus LS430 I was driving. I have been without a performance car since I sold my Z06 last year as I was trying to decide what I wanted. The Z06 was fun & fast, but noisy and impractical.

The M5 has fulfilled my need for performance & luxury at the same time. I have had only one problem. Last week the SAS went south & the dealer had it repaired in 3 hours. With the 745iL, I would have been back to the shop in the same period of time at least 5 or 6 times.

So the M5 has been as reliable for me as any car I have owned & compared to the 745iL it is much improved.

I hope this helps.
