I'm using an iphone 4 and an ipod touch with my OEM interface! Works fine!
But you need to buy the power adaptor cause the newer ipods an iphones had a different pin configuration. Your device will work but will not charge!

While I've only used it a short time this afternoon, I can say I'm glad I went this route over the aux input. Having the ability to see the song titles on the i-drive, along with the fact that it pauses the song when on a phone call or when you mute the radio, and not to mention that it keeps the iPod charged are 3 features that I think beat the aux adapter option, hands down.

My ONLY negative comment about it is the location of the connector. I realize it replaces the cd changer in the glove box, but this would have been MUCH better had the connector been in the center console... since I store anything in there anyway. It's just a pain to have to reach over and dig into the glove box to disconnect it. Hmmmm, there's a new DIY for someone... figure out how to extend the cable and route it into the center console

I did this with my last M5 (06) and am contemplating doing again with my 07. spec.dock - complete iPod and iPhone vehicle integration makes a great ashtray replacement dock for the ipod/iphone. I "simply" ran the connector under the carpet to under this new dock and wa-lah... i have a mount for my phone and its connected. it was a great setup. and it charged it.

Hey sorry im sure guys bug you about the ipod install all the time. I was wondering where you got the ipod interface for the car and if it something generic or optimized for our car. Also wondering if you control the ipod from the radio or its controlled from the ipod itself. Thanks for the help. Always wanted to have an ipod/iphone plug just didnt want to spring for the dealer install so ive been using a crackly sounding fm transmitter. Thanks again

First things first...do you have the 6disc CD changer in your glove box? If so go ahead and do the following, but if not then I don't know how to help you. You purchase the MOST iPod interface from the dealership and do the install YOURSELF. It is extremely easy, the OP posted spot on directions. When I did my install I didn't remove the glove box door as the OP did, I just left it on, my hands are small. Follow his pictures on the the first page but you're simply unscrewing, unplugging, replugging, zip tying. That's it.

The zip ties are the hardest part, a little tedious, also the ones that come with the interface are really stiff and one of mine broke while trying to tighten it, it's not a big deal but just be cautious of that. I found it easier to loosely clip the zip ties on first, THEN insert the interface and tighten down.

I went ahead and purchased the face plate, I like it, a couple people on this discussion talked about drilling holes into it and running the wire through but if you clip on the faceplate first, there is JUST enough room ABOVE it for the wire to fit, even when closed. So that's what I did, no drilling necessary.

It is controlled through the iDrive controller and on the screen, just plug in your iPod and leave it in the glove box. It will also work with an iPhone, the iTunes portion can be controlled through iDrive but if you want to play pandora or youtube etc. you have to disconnect the iPhone first, open up whatever audio app you're trying to use on the phone then plug it back in. Make sure the CD (iPod) choice is selected on the iDrive then wait about 15 seconds and it will override and play the audio. I think I covered everything but let me know if I can be of any more help
