I am sure most are thrilled with the E60 M5. If you had to pick 3 general areas of improvement what would they be sound, comfort, trans etc.

Are you asking what "has" improved over the E39 or what "needs" to improve with the E60??

1. Have the car default to the last driving setting, (i.e. S5, P500) or whatever when you first start it rather than having it default to S3 or D3, P400. Maybe this could be automatically programmed by the FOB since it already sets other driver preferences.

2. Spare tire. (I bought a set of winter tires and I am going to see if one of them would fit in the trunk)

3. With all due respect for technology, I still feel naked without an oil dipstick.

Its the little things. This would be a deal killer for my dad. So there is no way to check it, you have to rely on the computer?

Electronic, computer read oil level sensor. No dipstick.

Eisboch, your comment about feeling naked without an oil dipstick...

Do you also feel naked without a fuel dipstick? Before electronic fuel guages we measured the amount of fuel left with a fuel dipstick. Guess you are too young to know that. Progess is wonderful!

Maybe at 56 years old I *am* too young to remember cars that you measured fuel with a stick. Tractors, yes, but not cars.

If I had a sense that the electronic oil check system was accurate and reliable I might feel different, but the BMW system seems to be very erratic.
Mine measured 1.0L when I took delivery. At about 250 miles it read 0.8L which was fine, didn't surprise me as the M5 seems to use some oil during break-in. (This is my second '06 M5) Then at 270 miles it read 1.0L again. I've heard of cars using oil, but not making it. It also is not very linear in it's readings. It seems to stay at a "full" (i.e. 0.9L-1.0L) for a long time but when it starts to drop, it drops fast. I can get used to it, but being a semi- old fart I'd rather have a dipstick.

Yep, too young, by a year. Even my 1959 VW had a fuel dipstick, as an option. Anyway, my electronic oil gauge has been extremely accurate, and a lot better than opening the hood to check oil once in a while. This is the second car I've had with electronic oil gauge.

The default S3 p400 sucks. It takes me 47 minutes just to get the car the way I want it before I start to drive - and I'm still in break in. Gotta activate the active seats, hve to get to s5, change the dampening, idrive takes 7 minutes to activate before the radio can turn on, need to turn on the ipod through the aux port in the back seat, etc etc. And that's assuming the seat returns to my position after the garage guys bring it up....I am enjoying the car, but it's a whole lotta computer...

David....You seem unhappy.......May I sugest...? Really Im not being a wize guy, Read the Manuals the 3 of them...read em 3 times.....It will sink in..Yes the I drive is a little slow, but still Great.....Set the "M" button to run the mode you most desire, it's easy...Greg.

David, you need to tip your garage guy better and take care of him at Christmas time, mine has all that setup for me and my ipod on my favorite just downloaded podcast news when I get the car every morning. And true, you can delegate all the power setups to the "M" button to be exactly what you want. Also, not trying to be a wiseguy.......
