it started on lsd. i was on my way home with a friend when i spotted a viper gts just ahead of me as i was getting ready to get off on north ave. right away i hit the magic ///M button and jumped in right in front of him- just to catch his attention. actually, the real reason i did it is because i love to take that exit really aggressively and didn't want any cars in front of me to keep it safe. anyway, i click the paddle a few times to downshift, position myself for the turn, and just take off- i end up taking the turn around 70-80 mph. as i'm coming out, i glance in my rear view mirror and what do you know? he's right behind me. i was kinda surprised because i didn't think he was doing to play at all. we continue to play cat and mouse down lasalle while the i'm really hoping to catch a red light with him- isn't that ironic, when you actually want to stop at a red light, it's always green. this continued all the way to ontario when he signalled to turn right towards the highway. at this point, i'm getting really excited cause it's the first time i'm going to race someone worthy. as we approach the last light before the fun starts, i get this familiar beep that i've grown so used to hearing lately. the damn gas light! the one time i have someone i want to race, i'm quickly running out of gas. :mad. f-it, can't let this pass. the light turns green and we take off. i slam my foot all the way down- suprised it didn't go right through- and just brace myself for the rush about to come. with both v10's screaming at full throttle and tires screeching, first gear is done instantly. shift to second when the heads-up display flashes and immediately look over. oh oh, with second gear coming to an end, he's starting to pull on me- still have about 2 cars on him cause i took off first. third comes up so quickly that i couldn't even shift in time. hit the rev limiter and bounce off. not good, lost even more momentum. at this point, i'm starting to feel that i'm trouble. pull the paddle one more time and what do you know he's not going anywhere anymore. i guess the brutally fast smg,(s6 mode) must have saved me. we continue to up to about 130-140 and he let's off with no one going anywhere. i might have started to pull on him since i was right in the sweet spot, but we'll never know. he pulls in behind me- 2 lanes merge into one- and we both hit the brakes hard cause of slow traffic ahead. to my dissappointment, no other opportunity presented itself and with the car running on only fumes now, i needed to get off fast. he pulled up next to me and we exchanged thumbs up with all of us, including my friend, having grins from ear to ear. . the rest of the day went by great!
nice!!! I remember i met this red viper (old body) at trafic light in my 05 E55 and he tried to run away from me but i was right on his tail till 150 km/h and that guy was so shocked he didnt even give me thumbs up after lol
As an owner of both cars, I have to say that the Viper is actually the slightly faster car when both cars are in stock form. There are also quite a few 850 - 1,200 hp Vipers running around these days. They can be absolutely scary fast.
Where the M5 has a distinct advantage is shifting. Its enough of an advantage that the average M5 driver will beat a stock Viper most days. However, a skilled driver in a Viper is deadly (pun intened). The Viper is not an easy car to drive.
I've read enough of these stories to convince me that most people, most of the time, would be better off using D5 instead of S6 for these roll-on races. Most people seem to mistime their shifts - it's really easy to do especially in stressful race situations - too soon and you have less than optimal power, and too late and you lose significant time when it bounces off the limiter. The perfectly-timed D-mode shift will more than make up for being a few ms slower (most of the time). Using D5 also provides for quick quickdown for optimal gear selection at the start. If you want to optimize this further, set the M mode to D5, P500S and DSC off (or MDM) and use the M button.

Totally agree. Sometimes when driving by feel, the car is still pulling so smoothly, it feels like you could keep revving forever and you bounce off the red. Happened to me the other day when racing a CLK55 - even after bouncing off the limiter, I still smoked him!!

and as another owner of both cars i can tell you that a stock gts feels much faster but is actually slower once you hit top of 3rd or so.. up to that point the snake might be ahead if you do know how to drive it, but after that it is just..slower and starts to lose ground... worse aerodynamics combined with steep gearing and simply less hp to the wheels are the culprit
less HP to the wheels? I've seen stock Viper GTS's put down 425 rwhp.... GEN III's put down about 440 rwhp...

hm.. maybe.. but must be exceptionally strong ones.. mine gen2 gts when bone stock made 392 rwhp (at a e39 m5 meet ) and that is pretty normal. dunno about srt10s..
also, dont forget gearing - 425 rwhp in 4th (1:1) for the gts, but that might be misleading- the m5 has better torque multiplication so in real world applications it will put more hp to the ground in the higher gears.. and dont forget aerodynamics.. over 100ish your shape makes a huge difference..
and the m5 is documented to be faster than a stock srt10 above 4th... i think gustav had a video somewhere...
I would like to see the torque multiplcaton calculations that show the M5 puts down more HP/torque at higher gears than the Viper.....
