Dyno of my M5 with K&N Filters (stock w/out charcoal filters)

Just picked up my M5 yesterday from K&N Filters in Riverside. Left the Beast there with them for a week so they could design the heat shields for their performance air intake for our cars (3 previous M5 owners helped them produce the tube & filter and get some before & after dyno numbers). They were quite generous for me providing the car...free rental car, free air intake kit when they produce it in a month or two. The RWHP and Torque curves are plotted of the stock w/out filters and shown on the attached PDF. The numbers pretty much fit with what I expect from other members here on the board. I thought the peak torque might be coming in a little on the low side, but I don't know.

They wouldn't let me keep the dyno sheet showing RWHP stock vs. K&N air intakes, but lets just say that I look forward to installing them and think a lot of other board members will too. The HP gains spread across the entire rpm range. They didn't have a torque curve plotted so I can't say how that was affected.

In other news...I've heard Evosport is just a couple weeks away from several great products being released. Looking forward to seeing what they have for us.

interesting, according to this graph your particular car will get best accelleration if you shift it at 8000 rpms (assuming approx 500 rpm gear drops)... i wonder if ze germans didnt intend it that way and the 250 extra rpms are just there as a rev-limiter avoidance buffer...

Very interesting. What gear was the run done in? Looks like your HP peak is actually occurring a little higher than the spec of 7250, maybe 7600 or so.

If you are running 431 rwhp, and the tranny is very efficient (15% loss), then that gives you 507 crank HP. I'll guess you're probably running more crank HP, since you're probably running more than 15% drivetrain loss. The 317 peak torque does seem a bit low - that would only give you 373 ft-lb torque at the crank by the same calculation.

Overall, this is a great test result - the first real dyno graph I've seen on a US spec M5 - give us more details!!

So tell us how they were able to get the dyno done but nobody else can figure out how to get a Dyno on a US M5 without it going into "limp mode"? Is yours an early build?

I'll have to correct you on this one mate. The official HP peak is at 7750 rpm

Very interesting dyno run though - and I can't wait for evosport to release their products either!

Well, I noticed the note - 2500 - redline in 5th gear. Sixth gear really would be the optimum, since it is a direct 1:1 ratio, but I guess the speed gets too high for the dyno or the limiter.

Wolverine...you answered your own question. They used 5th gear. I wondered why too but didn't ask at the time, but I've also remember one board member has dyno results with 3rd gear. 6th gear would be optimum, but oh well.

Production intake units will probably be ready for the public in 6-8 weeks if all goes well with the final pre-production unit. They might be sending me the pre-production unit that they sign-off on for production in as little as a month from now, so it's possible I'll be able to try this out before units go on sale and of course I'll post my opinions here.

As far as limp mode...I asked about it when I dropped the Beast off. They do it in S-5, P500 Sport (unnecessary, but they put it in that mode) and MDM. Apparently using DSC-off is actually causing the limp mode to kick in, so they're unable to use S-6 and DSC-off for the dyno. That may be a way for anyone else here to get proper dyno runs, although it might not provide the most accurate results.
