Back from the drag strip...

Well I finally did it...went to the drag strip for the very first time tonight. Although it rained on and off the entire time, It was quite a learning experience.

First off, when I got to the strip and payed the attendant for admission she looked at me and asked, "spectator"? I said, Uh, Nooooo I will be running". She then took my money and off I went to register the car. While I was in line I quickly noticed that the M was a little out of place. Here was a 4 door car with 2 child seats in the back surrounded by some serious (drag strip only) cars that had to have been 150 db's idling. People kepted on looking at me with the look of. "are you serious". But after noticing a few stock mustangs, an SRT8 Jeep, some C6 vettes, etc... I began to feel just a weee bit more comfortable. Ss after a lengthy wait I finally made it to the inspector. He looked at my car and said looks good and basically told me to have a good time. I then asked him if he wanted to see my helmet (he checked everyones in front of me) he replied, "no, you do not need to wear a helmet unless you are in the 13's".

So with that, off I went for my first run....and it wasn't pretty. No need to elaborate but basically nothing went right and I ran in the mid 13's. I used LC but when I shifted into 2nd the car went sideways, hit the rev limiter, blah, blah, blah. (BTW, all of my runs were with P500s, S6)

The 2nd and 3rd runs was more of the same but I eased up a bit going into second instead of using S5 and it droped my time down into the high 12's.

My 60' times with LC were not very good (2.1ish) so I changed it up a bit and what a difference.

My 4th run (after doing a lenghthy burn-out) I decided to just hammer the gas instead of using LC but when I felt the tires about to slip I just eased off a bit (maybe 20%). This turned out to be my best launch (1.947) and also my best time. Unfortunetely, this was also my last run because of the rain. This is what it looked like:

R/T: .550
60: 1.947
330: 5.431
1/8: 8.215
MPH: 89.74
1000: 10.573
1/4: 12.545
MPH: 116.06

* note: I hit my limiter going from 2nd to 3rd (barely)

Needless to say I was anxious to try again but as I was approaching the burn out area for my 5th run, the rain started again and never stopped.

All in all I had a good time and I will probably do it again. I do not have a scanner but I did take picture of my slip with a couple other shots. Feel free to comment.

Cheers ///

It's a good thing you took that helmet after all.

Well you still probably ran pretty good considing your car is all stock, if you are drag racing why not considering a turbo or a blower

Congratulations on a great night of fun. Think what the launch practice will do for you next time you need to introduce a Corvette to the M5 concept...

Sounds like you had some serious fun, and great time for the first encounter with the drag strip in the new car. Did the inspection guy ask to see the helmet after your first run?

Great times - 12.5@116 is really good for your first trip. You should post on dragtimes.com. Excellent launch at 1.94 - I'm having trouble getting under 2.1 with my gtech. I hope to hit the strip in a few weeks.

Funny you should ask. After my last run he did inspect my helmet and later asked, "what's that thing got in it"? - I replied, "two kids seats".
