My M5 has been holding a reading of 1.0L for about a month now, so I was worried because we all know how thirsty for oil the M5 really is, so today I did the quick reading and to my surprise: 1.5L. Any thoughts?

P.S if my car keeps doing that I'll be a rich man.

Go drive at least 30 highway miles and the computer should give you the true reading.

Agreed. You have the run the car between 30 and 40 miles to get an accurate reading. The normal level is 0.8L. 1.0L is max.

By the way, someone told me a BMW mechanic told him that if the oil level is too high, ie above 1.0L, the engine is designed to burn off enough oil to bring it down to 0.8L. Has anyone else gotten this prognosis?

The manual makes clear that the instantaneous measurement is less accurate than the normal measurement.

There is nothing strange about your oil level holding steady at 1.0L after break-in. It will decline steadily but slowly.

I did & it went back to 1.0L.
