How does the new BMW M5 stack up against Porsche, Audi and others?

Dear 001,

Check out this comparison...

Audi RS4 vs. The Rest - Interesting data
The Swedish magazine AUTOMOBIL tested the new Audi RS4.

The have their own "A-Test" with different measuremennt as seen below.

As you can see the Audi RS4 does very well - (much) better than I had expected. It reaches Top 5 or Top 10 in most areas, and the competition is very hard!

The verdict for the Audi RS4 was:
"The RS4 is a compromise in harmony between winter capability and your racing license"
The one and only drawback was that they felt the RS4 lacked enough feedback in the steering wheel and pedals. But what you get instead is the possibility to load your car full with stuff, four passangers in comfort in every possible weahter, nothing the BMW M3 can't boast with.

The car was on Pirelli PZero Rossos. 255/35/19

The list is far from complete, but it gives you an idea.

* 0-100 km/h
1) Audi RS4 4.6
2) BMW M5 4.7

Great post.

I see the RS4 faired pretty well... its a nice looking car, just too bad it boils down to being a $100k Audi A4...

What is MSRP on the RS4? I thought it was going to be around $80k.

Good for Audi but what I don't get is that the RS4 or any other 4 wheel drive can't get anywhere with the z-rated stock tires in snow.

In Sweden, you have to switch to snow tires in the "dark" months but in the US we have no such requirement. In that case, the M3, M4 and all the high performance Audi's are all bascially big hockey pucks.

If you switch to snows, then all the BMW's are very good good in snow like any other car.

I can just see someone buying the RS4 and boasting about the 4 wheel capabilities without understanding that without the right tires, they are screwed!

On a UK Motoring Programme last week (5th Gear), they pitched the new RS4 up against an M3CS & the results went like this.

Drag race the RS4 won by quite a margin.
Drifting the M3CS won by a country mile, as the only drift the RS4 could manage was almost a 90 degree angle for a very short period then it would snap back into shape (quite amazed how it got to 90 degrees & could still remain under control).
Final test was a head to head lap round a fairly twisty track & the RS4 won but not by much & the M3 was catching. The RS4 got a 5-6 car length lead from the start given it's hige power advantage, but the handling played back into the M3's hands & by the end of the lap the M3 was only 1 car length behind.

I know this is hardly an M5, but the drivers (ex-motorsport) comments went that the RS4 was not very involving & although quick was far from being a true drivers car & the M3 was just great fun.

Coming from a highly modified RS6, i can confirm that the RS models are excellent point & squirt cars & can be insanly quick however they are not what you could call involving.

Just found this as an updated Nurburgring Lap Time Stats.

It shows the new RS4 is a good few seconds quicker round the Ring.

However it's worth pointing out that the RS4 was driven by none other than Frank Stippler who at the very worst is a Ring veteran & knows the track probably as well as Sabine (Ring Taxi) & the M5 was driven by a Motoring Journo, so with experience being the biggest factor for that track, you'd expect the M5 if driven by Frank to be much further up the rankings. The other thing the stats don't show is weather & even traffic conditions, as many cars are tested during public days. Bottom line though is the new RS4 made quite a showing & can be seen on the stats to have dispatched some very heavy weight competition.

The RS4 is more of a match against the old M5 than the new M5. We did some fats short comparison with the E39 M5 and the RS4:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...71395013&q=rs4

Also the Sport Auto Supertest confirms this with a 0-200 km/h in 16,9 s.
Of course being a new and lighter car the car has a better road holding on the ring than the M5, esp. the old M5. However the times set on the Nordschleife wwas with the optiona sport suspension and optinal carbon brakes.

Either way.. optional brakes / suspension / expert driver .. that is a great time to post .. It might not be as involving as a M3 / M5 etc .. but it will make a good challenge to us in the real world..

LOL!

This is a copy of a post I made a couple of days ago.

And the RS4 time with Frank Stipler is not from 8200rpm but from me here:
http://www.rs6.com/forum/showthread....&highlight=758

I'm flattered, someone is copying me

Think about it: The RS4 is as fast as the Ferrari 360 Modena (sport auto times, same driver, known conditions etc.)
