Silver Gray vs. Black M6 -- Help Please

I've posted this on the E63 forum, but I'm hoping that some of you here would be kind enough to help as well. I'm about to spec my M6 and would appreciate some fresh opinions on color.

I've read many, many posts debating color, including the silver gray/black threads, but I'm hoping that a few members will help out with their current thoughts with regard to these colors on an M6.

The car will be my daily driver (993TT is my weekender), and I was all set on Silver Gray until now, as I visited the dealer today and was *very* impressed with the "liquid black" look of an in-showroom Sapphire Black M5.

Having owned several black Porsches (and gray and arctic/brilliant silver on 5 previous BMWs and MBs), I'm all too familiar with the maintenance headaches of black, but that M5 today, well, whoa.

I've exclusively used Zymol (concours) on previous black vehicles, and am fairly good at minimizing swirl marks, though I've never owned a black BMW. Maybe I would need to switch to Zaino for the BMW?

To complicate matters, I'll probably opt for a black interior, and really didn't want all-black, but then again, it wouldn't kill me. I'm somewhat afraid of the lightness and two-tone contrast of the Silverstone interior (would've loved polar gray).

In any event, I'm confused as h*ll and would truly really appreciate the opinions of fellow members here.

Thanks all.

The car is absolutely beautiful in black. If I knew how easy it was to wash (lots of big, flatish panels, not many vents, scoops, etc), I would have picked black, no question.

Zaino works well, especially for longevity. You won't get the depth of Zymol Concours, but you'll get more shine.

Consider picking up a CR Spotless deionizing solution, or something similar.

I think Porsche does a much much nicer black interior than BMW. If you don't mind maintaining the black exterior, and it sounds like you won't since you have experienced black cars in the past, I would highly recommend Black Sapphire. I love my Black Sapphire. However, you might want to consider a Silverstone or Sepang interior. Personally, I think a darker exterior with a lighter interior will look better than a darker interior with a lighter exterior. Just my personal opinion.

As for the M6, I think it is a huge car, so the Black Sapphire exterior will help make it seem a little smaller. Plus it will look very mean and cool.

I was unsure about black/black when I placed my order. But when clean, my black/black M5 looks so stunning that I am very VERY glad I picked that color combo. I have not seen a black/black M6 in person yet, but imagine it looks awesome.

I think despite the difficulty in keeping it clean, it more than makes up for the effort in visual reward!

I agree with everyone here that the black looks great, and black/black (with aluminum trim IMHO) would be great. I have seen the silver-gray. It's a nice color, but it seems like it's the hot color of a few years ago and not 2006+. Black is always timeless for a car like this.

hated the idea of black exterior, but then saw an M6 in Specialist Cars in the UK with tinted windows and it looked absolutely brilliant. Still havent seen an E63 M6 or E60 M5 that looks better in any other colour.

Couldnt see the interior so cannot comment really on that.

All a matter of taste, what you face, and what you want. After three BonB, I went silver on silver. In Houston, no matter what someone tells you, BoB is tough in the summer heat, the pine pollen gets you, and the need to constantly be washed calls to you. Now I always had the mirror black and it also showed swirl marks and minor scratches almost no matter what. But when it was polished it definitely looked great. That being said, I can't tell you how many people have said how attractive the silver/silver/brushed look comes across. The BMW silverstone is really a mixture that looks like three different colors depending on the light and time of day. I do worry more about the interior showing smudges than the black leather but so far no problems. Silver is definitely a common color when you look at the cars and SUVs of the last couple of years but the silverstone definitely is not that silver look. That being said, even if it was the common silver/grey I might do it anyway for a change from what I have had, the lower maintenance, and the slightly better heat relief. You get to live with what you buy so go with what you want. At the end of the day, you will likely be happy with the car regardless of the color combo you get. It is THAT good.

Thank you all for your comments.

Thusfar, I',m leaning so much toward SB that I'm walking with a tilt, lol. Still, it's like watching a horror movie with a happy ending -- I'm kinda happy, but still residually scared!

Btw, this is the type of thread that could go on for quite a while, and I hope it does -- these are all very worthwile and valuable views.

Another btw, we can't tint our windows here in Illinois (the cops too much fear getting shot, for good reason, I guess. Geez, is that ever sad).

Thanks again guys.

Wayward,
See my recent post "saw 2 beauties today w/pics", I took pics of our M6 in Black on Black delivered earlier this week. By the way they had the wood trim and it looked out of place in the M6. You could already see swirl marks in the paint!!!!!! The car looks menacing, but up close, argh!!!
Have you thought about white or indy red?? Tough choices, but if you are willing, as it seems, to invest in good waxes then get black. I hate black cars for the swirl and they look bad dirty, but clean, that car looked AWESOME!!!!! Minus the wood trim. The carbon fiber blended in real well with the black, too.
By the way, the wheels look even more agressive in person.
Good luck and let us know what happens!!!

Robert

Without having seen an M6 in black on the road yet, I'll take a guess and say I'm afraid it might look a little too much like a regular 6-series. Black will hide the lines of the front bumper, the CF roof won't stand out the way it would on any other color, plus the M6 doesn't have the same distinctive side gills as the M5 and M3. If none of these things bothers you and upkeep is not an issue, SB is an amazing color. Have you thought about Indy Red interior, I think it would look stunning on black.

That being said, I have a Silver Gray M and wouldn't have it any other way. It always looks great, never shows dirt or swirls, and it's just dark enough to show a good detail job. Funny thing is, I almost got black but this picture of a 6er at Bimmerfest convinced me to get SG this time around
