MP3 CD - Long file names - How to on a Mac?

I've been trying to make a MP3 CD on a Mac with long file names with absolutely no luck. On a Windows PC the excellent instructions by Tim_M in this post MP3 disc creation guide works great. The key is the software MP3BR Imager which seems to make a relaxed ISO 9660 filesystem without the ugly 8.3 DOS filenames.

However, on a Mac, I've tried 3 versions of Toast to burn the CD but they all seem to make a filesystem with the 8.3 filenames so when it's in the M5's player all you see is the 8 char rubbish.

Anyone help?

I am no computer geek, but maybe I can help!

MEnthusiast, help me with my MAC, however I did not use Toast.

Try burning direct from iTunes instead of Toast. The have worked fine for me every time!! Keep in mind, anything purchased from iTunes will not burn as a MP3.

Hope this is some help, or try writing Jerry, MEnthusiast for tips!

Here's a post with the settings I used with Nero on a PC--not sure if there's a Mac version:

I also used iTunes, created a playlist and burned to a DVD, but you don't get artist/album/track hierarchy.

One thing to check is whether you are burning an MP3 CD, an audio CD, or a data CD. Right now using the MP3 option under ITunes seems to work best for me.

Also, I use XP but found that a filename problem was created when I burned CDs in Itunes from a database that had originally been started with MusicMatch (early gen IPOD ripping s/w) and then later had ITunes ripped music added. ITunes had name issues, path issues, and Gracenote (although a lot of people seem to like GN better than whatever MusicMatch uses) issues. I also have duplicate filename issues under ITunes. These all may have gone away if I used the consolidate function in ITunes but I never had any issue under MM. So I am going to use ITunes to download music to the phone and Pod and MM to keep the library and see how things go.

Keep in mind that any iTunes downloads are in AAC format, so if you want to burn them on a CD as MP3 files, it's a pain.

Sydl,

This is a document from Apple support, hopefully this should help you it works fine. I think it is easier to use iTunes for this. As mentioned however all iTunes store songs won't burn to a MP3 CD due to copyrights. There are also few discussions over at E60 forums about this.

Thanks all. The Apple document solved everything.

However, if you use Toast, the magic settings are:

Data; ISO 9660; CD-ROM; Allow Macintosh Names

This setting will not make an ISO filesystem with 8.3 filenames and works great!

Another tip - make sure the ID3 tags are in version 1.1, I've found that if it's any higher the MP3 player doesn't display the tag when the song is playing.

So here are the instructions after a few days of mucking around:

Option 1:
If you use iTunes to store and play MP3s you can make a CD directly from iTunes.
- Make sure you have set iTunes to Burn MP3 CD and not Audio or Data CDs.
Preferences; Advanced; Burning; MP3 CD
- Then select a playlist and click BURN in the top right corner. Check out this document if you want the songs arranged by Artist or Album: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60931

Option 2:
If you don't use iTunes or want the songs ordered in folders you can use Toast software.
- Select Data CD, then select the files and folders you want on the CD
- Select Settings and make sure it is set to CD-ROM; Allow Macintosh Names
This will make a MP3 CD with all the songs arranged in folders so you can choose them easily with the M5 user interface. Just like the MP3BR software for Windows.

Have fun!

I just burned my first MP3 cd for my '07 M5 using iTunes, and it simply ROCKS. It took me 10 minutes to set it up and burn it, and it works perfectly in the M5. All of the music is arranged in the following hierarchy: Artist -> Album -> Song, using the actual properly formatted names. It also loaded quickly.

SWEET! Just too cool.
