What Is Done at the 1,200 Mile Service
According to the Owner's Manual, the engine, transmission and differential oil needs to be changed at the 1,200 mile service. When I look at my service invoice, I see that they used oil, filter and gearbox oil. Is the oil in the transmission the same as the oil in the differential? Is the "gearbox oil" used for both components?
Here is what shows up on my invoice:
1. 8 Engine oil
2. 1 Oil filter
3. 3 Gearbox oil
If you take a look at your service invoice, please tell us what other parts have your service guys included in your 1,200 mile service.

I will look at my invoice when I get home, but I know they changed all three on my car - since I was there watching, but don't know what is on the invoice. Will post tonight.

There wasn't any of that happening...I was by the car the whole time...
Tech only drove it 1.5 miles to make sure the transmission was good...I could have ridden along if I wanted to, but he's a good guy and I trust him.

It's true. When I bring in my 323i for service, I bring the car in at 67,534 miles, and I pick it up at 67,535.
The first time I brought in my M5, the techs puts 36 miles on it to figure out why the oil gauge showed 1.5L, the second time they put 9 miles on it to change the VANOS oil line and this time when I brought the car in for the 1,200 mile service, they put six miles on it.
Do they really need to drive test an M5 on every service? They obviously don't need to do it on any other car. I don't think so . . .

Thanks. My invoice only showed filter element, oil, run in service and gearbox oil. They did not indicate diff oil, standard scope check.
I called up the dealer. I asked him to speak with the technician who confirmed that they changed the tranny and diff oil. Apparently, the diff oil comes from a bulk source so they did not have to requisition the product and forgot to put it on the invoice. I only wish they were as detailed as your guy was on stating each thing that was done.

No, it is included as is all of the regular service up to 36K or 40K (can't remember off hand).
BTW, when I got my Beast back from it's 1200 mile service at BMW SF, which also had the VANOS replacement, there was only 1 mile extra put on it--and that might have been just from driving it to the service area and back.
