Just back from a great time in Hurghada (fabulous Oberoi resort on the Red Sea).

UPDATE:

I got the car back this afternoon and the problem was diagnosed as follows:

"Gearbox slave cylinder leaking into bell housing - losing pressure - whole unit has to be changed".

So I'm running in my third gearbox. The only "revenge" is that these things cost close to $10,000 each so BMW must be forking out a small fortune on warranty work for my car.

I will be submitting my case for a replacement vehicle/refund in the next week or so - interesting times ahead.....

Reading that I would assume a replacement slave cylinder, but checking parts reveals no seperate parts are available....... In goes gearbox number 3! I really hope it works out for you Ashok!

We stayed at the Oberoi in Giza a few months back, it was really a nice hotel. Being from the states I had never heard of them. The brochures for their other properties were impressive.

I read somewhere that BMW does not 'fix' transmission parts. It's the whole transmission unit or nothing.

My sentiments exactly. BMW might be better off just giving you a new car to avoid these expensive fixes (much more expensive to fix a car than to build a car) and the public relations nightmare.

The other question though is that I cannot understand why the second gearbox failed. I would have thought that they fixed the problem after the first replacement, ie worked out the bugs, so the second one should be no worse than what we have in our 2006 model year cars. I wonder if something else that was not replaced is causing a perfectly good gearbox to fail.

Here in the U.S. we have Howard Johnson, Holiday Inn and Motel 6. In the rest of the world, they have Oberoi, Aman and Banyan Tree Resorts. What we want more than anything else is value for money, which explains why Samsung phones (free with contract) are the best selling phones in the U.S. now. In the rest of the world, everyone uses Motorola RAZRs (only very recently free with contract) and PEBLs (not free with contract). In fact, Motorola is on to its 3rd generation RAZR in Europe and Asia. We are still on the 1st generation phone, and Motorola is an American company. Go figure . . .

PPP,
While there are individual problems with this M5, I believe the same was true of the E39. I personally know someone who had major mechanical problems with 2 E39 M5s.... So I disagree with your theory that the E60 is somehow unreliable as a whole.

I am sympathetic to those like Ashok who have experienced true problems- I do not believe these are the rule for the M5- rather the exception- but reading them on the internet makes it seem like the rule.

Hello Ashok,
Like everybody else, I feel so badly for all that you have gone through!

I can't believe that BMW is allowing you to have such a bad experience. It would be bad for any customer, but someone that is so closely associated with this enthousiast Board. (Could Mercedes or Audi have planned a better campaign to steal M5 sales? Everybody that reads this - especially guests that are thinking about getting an M5 have to be really thinking twice, three times, and then some before pulling the trigger.)

I agree that there were many issues with some E39s in its early years too. But still, I don't think I've heard anybody have so many problems.

Imagine the PR at all levels, including your kid's report back at school, "How I spent my family vacation".
