New Engine Moan-Whine at 3000-3300 rpm?

Parked car outside in cold 'cause the Mrs. used up both garage spots with her 530xiT and driving car today, noticed a new moan/whine in the engine that starts at 3000 rpm and fades away by 3300 rpm. It is purely from the engine and not transmission or diff because I can reproduce it in neutral at standstill! Never heard it before and I am 100% it happened new overnight.
Checked the fluid level in the steering pump and its ok, could it be the water pump? The noise is still there but a very touch fainter. Did not go away with driving car 60 miles and with warming up. Does not sound like a belt problem? Does the M5 have a belt-driven fan?
Any advice/recommendations?
Thanks, upset in BeanTown!

I also have a whine - but it may be something different - mostly noticable at freeway speeds and the pitch varies with acceleration/deceleration. I can't tell where it is coming from, but it sounds like the rear of the car - but I'm not positive about this. It distinctly started on the way home from my vanos replacement. It is annoying.

I think that's the diff/transmission and i have hears it on many M5 videos so it's normal. My noise is purely from engine, even at standstill and in the narrow rpm range from 3000-3300 rpm then clears up at higher rpms...

Very interesting. Heard this the other day driving home from work. Kind of a whine and definitely from the engine. Exactly at 3000 rpm and resolves quickly, present in 5th-7th gears (I switched them to see if it was present in more than one gear), and goes away fast. Never heard it before the 1200 mile service, and I drive with the radio off quite a bit just to hear the engine.

I noticed the same thing on my car. I find it only happens in 6th gear between 3,000-3,100 rpm. There is a definite increase in engine noise.

I'm curious how frequently other drivers are using 7th gear. I have not used it more than a handful of times. I'm typically between 5th and 6th on the highway.
