I think it's just a case of BMW introducing technology & options when they are market ready. It may be that the soft close door option was not ready when the car was originally launched and now that it is they don't want to wait until the new model year to make it available.

It may not apply so much to the M5, but certainly amongst luxury car buyers there are some that will choose one car over another because of the latest gimmick/gadget to impress themselves & their friends. Hence the rush to introduce active cruise control, high beam assist etc. If BMW don't offer it first, Mercedes or Audi (or Lexus) will.

I understand that BMW review their options on a regular basis and these are updated at least every few months. This does not imply a new model year. The 2007 cars will be produced from September 2006 onwards, even though some new options are offered before then.

One thing: Why would you want to add the weight of this system to a M5 ?

does anyone know if the 2007 E60 M5 will have all the new options the march builds of the 5's will have? meaning the night vision, audio input for ipods, individual tire pressure monitoring system and the HD radio? I'm asking b/c I am debating on waiting a few months till they start producing the 07's to get them added to my new M5. Thanks.

My understanding w/regard to the Nite Vision is that it will not be available on the M5 b/cause there is no room for it, the air scoop is in the way. This was discussed in several threads on this board. This raises an interesting Q as to whether there could be some aftermarket system that would find an alternate placement for the IR camera that apparantly BMW chose not to find. Perhaps a new thread on this topic.

I purchased my Beast from a dealer who had ordered it for another buyer who backed out. The only 2 options it lacks is HUD and rear seat warmers. My sales rep tells me that it would be impossible to have these added. Does anyone know if this is correct?

No, its defintiely possible -- just not practical. Enough money and you can do anything. Parts for the HUD modification alone will be $3000 to $4000. Hud unit alone is $2100 + new windshield, dash, etc. You would probably save money trading in your car on a new one with the options you want.

Wow. I do not miss either option THAT much. The car is perfect otherwise and I just got it back from my 1200 mile check-up. I'm not going to worry about it. Thanks for the info, though.

The HUD is important. Don't get it without HUD.

I disagree that HUD can be added from a practical point of view. It requires a different dash and a different windshield at the very least. Even if possible, I would not want major surgery like this done outside the factory.
