Not every time, but now and then, when I down shift to first there's a small 'clunk' sound as it's going into gear. I'm not sure if it's drive train slack or what, but I wondered if it's "normal".
I have an M6 and have been driving it for the past 1993Km. Yes, the M6 also does have the clunk. I sent it in for the first servicing yesterday and complained about the clunk. When I collected the car today, I was told that this is not uncommon with the SMG. Was told that the SMG 2 was even worse. Maybe someone around here who's driven a car with SMG 2 and now driving the M5 or M6 can advise us.
Just 220 miles so far but I did notice a big jerk if i downshift into first while rolling up to a stop sign/red light. I found it best to just stop while in 2nd gear and let the computer shift into 1st (which it does when the weight shift backwards at a complete stop). Otherwise if i'm rollling even a little I just leave it in 2nd. These observations are in mode S3.
Gotta go learn some more.

I think this is normal. If I am at a complete stop, I almost always feel the clunk. When downshifting from 10 MPH or so, it seems to transition smoothly. I am guessing that when all the parts are stationary, the gearbox just drops it in. When the parts are moving, it is able to transition easier. I am not a mechanic, but seems to make sense to me.

This happens with almost everyone. If you give it a little gas as you are shifting into first, it has a much smoother transfer.
