Me too. Seems like it is normal, but it sounds like it's broken. Transmissions really shouldn't make such sounds.

Same here. Only occassionally and only when in S and it drops into first on its own. The other day it was so pronounced I quickly looked in my rearview mirror to see who had bumped me...

Cool. I'm not worried about my car anymore.

I like SMG over all, but some of the sounds it creates just sound bad. It makes me worry about long-term reliability, etc. The warranty is great, but what about after that?

Anyway, thanks for the responses.

The other sounds I get are when just slowly parking or backing out. If I get the clutch to grab and start moving me, but then brake before it's all the way engaged, it will make this chatter/rattle noise as it's going back to dis-engaged. (disengaged = same thing as when at stop light and not moving)

Scott, I am a double footer, have been for a long time. I have to re-learn (even at my age) to use one foot on the gas or brake at a time. I realized that a lot of the clunking sounds went away once I started doing this. I only have about 1900 miles, but I play with it a lot.

Found this thread through a search.
I have an '08, and get the same clunking noise when the car shifts into 1st at a stop.
I verified this by shifting 1st to 2nd and then to 1st while stopped.
Its going in tomorrow for my 1200 mi service and will find out if this is normal.

It's definitely normal.
I don't mind it when I'm by myself, but sometimes my passengers think something is broken when we hit those stoplights.

scott...i have NEVER EVER heard the clunk that you and everyone else here hears. then again, my radio volume is HIGH.

maybe that is why my car never had a noise issue???

hehehe
