Oil issue/split VANOS pipes - SERIOUS ISSUE! - WATCH YOUR OIL LEVEL AND FOR LEAKS!

Oil issue/split VANOS pipes - VERY SERIOUS ISSUE! - WATCH YOUR OIL LEVEL AND FOR LEAKS!

Hi all,

Appears to be effecting cars from Build week 35 - 45 (maybe more?).

I don't want to initiate panic on this (I know it probably will - but do this for your own comfort) - I think this issue is VERY serious indeed.

If you have a new M5/M6 and are nearing or have just had the first service - I urge you to be vigilant in checking oil level (leave it displayed on the dash), and check for leaks under the car.

We have now seen with Xavier that he is going through the nightmare scenario now (see thread: 3.000 KM and already back to BMW dealer ).

What are BMW doing about it?

Until this is resolved, I am looking underneath often and keeping the oil level display as my default view.

Re: Oil issue/split VANOS pipes - SERIOUS ISSUE! - WATCH YOUR OIL LEVEL AND FOR LEAKS!

I am at 1600 miles. Did the first service at 1100 miles and they changed the new oil filter at 1460 miles. My oil level shows 1.1L and no leaks so far. I won't be driving my beast until tuesday because I will be out of town and I'm sure that I will see the oil on the floor of the garage when I come back if there is a leak. But everything is well right now, knock on wood.

For those who have had the part replaced, it would be great if you could post the service order so we can compare if there is a new part.

I highly doubt just replacing the part with another one will solve the problem. We probably need a redesigned part!

My bet is that the design is not bad, but rather the batch. We did not hear these reports for the MY2005 sold throughout Europe. I trust they are replacing them with different units, maybe from a different supplier.

while this is important to know everything on the subject I think it would be wise to stop openning new threads everytime something new arise about this issue, it is getting out of control, same goes for the oil reading stuff, it looks like it is all we see lately.

Hi Robert,

I understand your post - even though people are aware of it, I don't think some realise how serious it is or could potentially be, hence why I put this post up to help pinpoint the problem quickly before it gets to a situation like Xavier's.

Moderators feel free to remove it.

While it is a huge issue and it is not surprising that we are seeing the majority of the traffic relates to the oil issue, I agree that opening another thread didn't really help.

Re: Oil issue/split VANOS pipes - SERIOUS ISSUE! - WATCH YOUR OIL LEVEL AND FOR LEAKS!

I keep hearing how serious this is but I have yet to hear why it's so serious?

These are my questions:
1. If the line leaks and you drive the car (assuming you keep oil topped up) is there potential for engine damage?
2. Does the car have to be towed or can it be driven to the dealer for the repair?

I just got my car (100mi.) and I'm planning a 4 hour drive to Virginia and back next weekend and I don't want to have to deal with this problem while I'm away from home.

Thanks.

Re: Oil issue/split VANOS pipes - SERIOUS ISSUE! - WATCH YOUR OIL LEVEL AND FOR LEAKS!

I got mine towed as soon as I noticed the leak. Wouldn't take a chance driving a car low on oil and plus, i would suspect you will cause more problems by driving it more during the leak. Flatbed it! Just hopefully they replace the line's with a different one. From a diff manufacturer hopefully. Like someone else said, why replace it with the one that already went bad. My car will be in the shop until at least friday. The lines are on national backorder. Getting my 1200 mile service while it's in there. I'm at 1025 now. So i'll get two things done in one shot.
