3.000 KM and already back to BMW dealer

Hi Folks,

I wish I could tell you a lot exciting things about my M5 but unfortunaltely the car is already back to BMW after only 3.000 KM.

Here is the story. I ran cautioulsy the very first 2.000 KM and already noticed that the oil consumtion was about 1 liter !!! I mentioned this during my very first service and BMW told me "it is normal for such a extreme engine" !

The same day I drove away for a plaisant 1.000 KM trip where I didn't push the car to much, just a bit to please a 997 s driver who wanted to have a short walk with me....but nothing bad... I stopped a few times to refuel the car and I had a very bad surprise to see big smokes coming out from underneath the car. I took a look and saw it came from all the exhaust lines...I though...it was due to a kind of stuff they put on it to protect it which didn't appreciate the heat...

I was wrong...

Later I saw on my board computer a message telling me that the oil pressure had a issue and I had to stop immediatly. I did check the oil level...and everything was ok but I decided to be safe to add some more.
I drove a few more KM and the message went back again..so I decided to stop the car and ask for BMW assistance.

And the cause was this stupid oil line which indeed is losing a bit oil when the pressure is getting high. When you speed up, the lost oil is going on your exhaust oil which is the cause of the big smokes I had...

It looks like this is a "well known issue" but I am realy upset that BMW didn;t decide to change this pipe when I did my first service. and as usual it happned to me when being upbroad so you can immagine the pain to call the BMW assistance, get a replacement car....

My real question now is to understand if the engine has been damage by this lack of pressure? Any info on this ?

Re: 3.000 KM and already back to BMW dealer

Hi Xavier,

Sorry to hear about your problems! it sounds like the nightmare scenario
To be honest, I would be concerned about the engine - what you would need to know is things like how much oil was really left in the engine when they drained it, and also - were there any metal bits/fine traces of metal parts in the oil (sometimes the oil actually appears silvery). This is something that you should really try and find out.

As I have mentioned in a number of previous posts, the engine may have been damaged because of what had happened - but you may not know until 1,2,3 years down the track.

As for smoke coming out everywhere underneath, I'm assuming that there was oil all underneath the car? do you know if there was smoke actually coming out the exhaust pipe itself? - if so then the engine would be damaged for sure.

Yes - as the revs rise, there will be more pressure in the line and more oil will come out any splits in pipes.

Again, this highlights how serious this issue is!

Please keep us posted.

Re: 3.000 KM and already back to BMW dealer

Glen,

Thks for you message.

Smokes didn't come from the exhaust rear pipes as such but more from the underneath pipes which makes me believe it is only ejected oil which burned on the pipes.

Indeed this is a serious issue as it seems all the cars produced in AUG-SEP-OCT are on the same story!

I think I will drive back in my country (1.000 KM again) full speed... the engine will break or will survive...don't want half beast !

I'll keep you posted.
