SMG unique to BMW?

Ok maybe a stupid question but is "SMG" unique to BMW only or do other car companies also use this tranny...? I know there are many companies that use paddle shifting etc... but are they "SMG"? Thanks in advance.

They don't use the BMW tranny but other manufacturers have transmissions which are based on the same principal.

I don`t think there are many that use manual secuential boxes. I can only think of Ferrari, VW (DSG which is not exactly the same, uses double clutch but is esentially a manual ), and BMW. There may be others but are the only ones that come to mind now.

Re: SMG unique to BMW?

Honda, Aston Martin, Fiat, Alfa Romeo. Most Japanese manufacturers have them.

Re: SMG unique to BMW?

Aston uses it on the Vanquish only, the DB9 is based on an auto tranny. Toyota and Honda use them too, also Ferrari, Maserat, Fiat et al

Re: SMG unique to BMW?

Lamborghini has it as well (dubbed 'e-gear')

One question, though. Are any of the sequential manuals in passenger cars true sequential gearboxes? The SMGII in the M3 is a standard manual gearbox which has a hydraulic clutch mechanism adapted to it. I believe the same is the case with the Magnetti Marrelli system used by Ferrari/Fiat/Aston Martin/Lamborghini. What about SMGIII?

Re: SMG unique to BMW?

The gearbox on the Lambo and Ferrari is sourced from Graziano (but that might only be the 6 speed manual gearbox - not sure).

Re: SMG unique to BMW?

When did Honda and other Japanese manufacturers start using a manual sequential gear box? As far as I know, they are auto's with a paddle shift. BMW's SMG trans is in small company as noted in some of the autos listed above.

Honda, Nissan, Mazda and Toyota all have a 5 speed sequential auto gearbox which they have been using since 2002. Honda has recently introduced a 7 speed sequential gearbox which they're going to use on newer models.

Honda, Toyota, Nissan only have sequential shift _automatic_ transmissions (i.e. with torque convertor) in their production cars. These are a far cry from SMG.
