Burnout's and Launch Control with bad wheel hop!

Burnout's and Launch Control

Hi all,

Had a play around this morning, having trouble doing a burnout! I think I need to find that happy medium of revs vs brakes!

Reason I was trying to do a burnout is because I tried Launch Control for he first time today. MAN!!! it has terrible wheel hop/tramping, which is basically when the rear wheels bounce up and down on the road as they are spinning - trying to get traction. It really isn't a nice feeling (feels like the diff. is going to fall out!) - so I pulled my foot out!

So, to overcome this wheel hop problem - I have done this on other cars before (RX-7 is the first one that comes to mind, as it had really bad wheel hop). Doing some solid burnouts in the RX-7 sorted the tyres, so that I could then do hard launches getting lots of traction and no wheel hop.

So trying to do this with the M5 now, and it appears to be a little bit of a mission to get it to do a burnout. Anyone got any tips?

Only used launch control once and absolutely no axle hop, out of the blocks incredibly fast.

Car slow out of the blocks without it, would be interested to see if you can use launch control without the full throttle and a 4k launch. I was hoping you could launch with say 2.5-3k revs but haven't tried that yet, if anyone else has tried this please give us your impressions.

Hi Peter,

I found that you couldn't launch it at lower revs, I tried 2k, 2.5k, 3k, 3.5k - and nothing happens when you let go of the lever.

I have managed to increase my revs to just under 5K (what it has on the tachno) - by pushing the cruise control lever forward, it is meant to be movable up and down by 500rpm from reading the manual. But I found that the needle just hovers slightly under 5K on mine.

You guys really should read the manual! You can adjust the launch control revs by using the cruise control stalk - I can't remember the adjustment range off the top of my head.

No axle hop whatsoever ( had it on the E39 sometimes )!

Tried both LC and DSC off takeoffs with a lot of wheels spin in 1st 2nd and 3rd. Temperatures where + 25 deg C.

Much depends on the surface you're on and the tire compound and tread pattern. Try it on a skid pad with slicks and see what happens!

What is the exact procedure for this? Our manuals in the USA say nothing about this.

Anyone whose already had their 1200 mile want to give it a try??
