Picked her up late in the day Friday. Its been raining yesterday and today so, unfortunately, pics wouldn't be very good. I'll try for tomorrow after I stop by my detailing shop for the first time.
I did want to share some initial impressions after moving from a 2003 E46 M3 with SMG II to SMG III. It does make a world of difference. First, there is no learning curve - the motions are the same on the paddles and on the joystick. But you wont' believe the extent to which it has been refined.
First, it is significantly smoother. No jerkiness and clunkiness as one occasionally had in the M3. And I haven't even explored S5 or S6 (as I'm still in the break-in period). I expected to find S4 sluggish, but its not. The clutch and diff action is much smoother than in SMG II.
Second, you never feel like you're in the wrong gear in this car. On the highway in 6th and want to pass? No problem. Downshift if you please, but its almost not necessary. Coming out of a slow corner in too high a gear (e.g. in 3rd where you should really be in 2nd)? No problem there either. There are such deep power reserves on tap that you're almost never in too high a gear. And I'm not even using 500 hp yet (choosing to save it until after break-in)!
For a two ton car, the steering feel is outstanding. Very light and very precise. It actually feels lighter and more agile than the M3.
I would strongly recommend the Head-Up Display. Not only is it cool, it serves a practical purpose as well. You can either have your navigation directions posted or the tach. Up to you. Very small and discreet but very useful. I like not having to take my eyes off the road. Other neat features are the folding mirrors, comfort access (don't need to insert the key) and, of course, the multifunction seat with active side bolsters. Finally, the Logic 7 sound system is far superior to that in the 2003 M3 which is also Harmon Kardon but not nearly as sophisticated or distortion-free.
Its also very easy to program the programmable button on the steering wheel so you can shut off the "nav lady" with one touch (are you listening Jeremy Clarkson?).
Anyhow, these are just a few initial impressions. I'll post some pics as soon as the weather clears up. Sepang bronze is very understated indeed. Not the "safest" colour choice, but very glad I chose it.
Best regards,
