Re: Timeline of E60 M5 Build--How Long it Takes from Build to Drive
ON THE WATER...
150-Production started 9/1/05 6:33:33 AM
(at this stage they just make sure all parts will be available and this is the only status where an actual time is stamped on my paperwork)
151-Entry body shop/serial number assigned 9/7/05-Wednesday
(although I had VIN at 150 status, this is really when production begins)
152- Entry paint shop 9/9/05-Friday
(hit paint on Friday and I believe Dingolfing is only a M-F plant)
153-Entry assembly 9/12/05-Monday
154-Assembly 9/12/05-Monday
155-Assembly finish/quality check-9/12/05-Monday
(a very productive day, obviously in production early Monday and finished at the end of the day, but car stayed in 155 status until 9/19)
160-Handover to sales and 190-Dispatched from AG-9/20/05-Tuesday
(from 160 to 190 all in one day-sounds like its on the way to Bremerhaven. Hopefully it will catch a scheduled ship on 9/22 or 9/23)
193-Arrival at port or compound 9/21/05 Wednesday
(hopefully it will make one of the WW ships on 9/22 or 9/23, the next ship is not until 9/29. The Freedom on 9/23 gets in 4 days earlier than the Mignon leaving today 9/22)
On the water!!! 9/26/05-Monday. Never assume anything is the lesson I learned today. After stalking the Wallenius site for days with no sign of my VIN or update from the dealer on which WW vessel my car would be on, the dealer called today with news that my M5 left Bremerhaven on the "Franconia" a K-Line auto carrier. This is my first BMW, that I can remember, not on a WW vessel. The ship was scheduled to leave on 9/25 according to the schedule, but actual sail date was 9/26 according to K-Line customer service peeps. It looks like a 15-day voyage with initial stops in Southampton, Baltimore and then calling on Charleston, SC on 10/11 where my E60 M5 will be off-loaded.
Re: Timeline of E60 M5 Build--How Long it Takes from Build to Drive
Thanks for all your insights on this process - lot more helpful than the dealer and owners circle.
My new beast is also now on the water thanks to WW VIN tracking - left Bemehaven 29/9 on the Elecktra scheduled to dock in NYC October 13th.
Probably little hope of delivery at the dealer that weekend but wih luck early the week of 17th.

Sounds very nice! It's pretty cool how you guys in the US can follow the timeline and transportation of your new car!
I read that you ship was leaving Bremerhaven, and just want to say that the people that work there are driving new cars like they stole them!! One of my friends were in Bremerhaven last week, and took delivery of a used car from the states, and while he was waiting for his car to be unloaded, some staff drove some brand new Mercedes like they just stole them, from the truck to the ship
My friend was just crying and said to him self - how can anyone drive a new car like that - with 2 km on clock and a cold engine!
Let's just hope they only drive the Mercedes this way - and not the BMW

Monday 10/10/05-The Franconia arrives at the dock in Charleston, SC at 0630 and began to offload at 0700. My car did not get loaded on a train to the VPC in Greer today, hopefully tomorrow.
****Here is the major news. I have shifted to a Performance Center Delivery in Greer, so I can better break in the car with a solid 600-mile drive instead of puttering around town for the next few months. This will obviously change the ending of my story. Stay tuned.

MJ --
How did you change your delivery location this late? I was told that the delivery location had to be specified before or, at the latest, during production. Did your dealer arrange this or did you contact BMW NA or the Performance Center?

Tuesday 10/11/05-8:45am I got the call this morning...my car DID make it up to the VPC at Greer on the first train. Hopefully it will be processed today and just awaiting the emissions clearance.

Actually, my car did make it on the first train out on 10/10 and was through the VPC by Wednesday 10/12. The CARB emissions block was still in effect which prevented me from picking up my car on Friday 10/14 at the Performance Center in Greer, SC. I rescheduled for the following week.
The hold was lifted on Monday 10/17/05 and I'll pick up the car on Friday 10/21!
