Does anyone have real proof that the CLS55 is faster than the M5, quarter mile?? I was at MB today, and thats what the manager told me there. He said it was because the CLS55 has a higher torque band. IS THIS TRUE?
Most of the videos that have tested both show them both pretty close in the 1/4, with the M5 usually a nose up front.
If you talk to him again, tell him that HP wins races, not torque. MB loves to sell their torque figures, but that isnt what motivates a car through the 1/4. He is feeding you a line of BS to make a sale.

I think that the M5 is faster, both do 0-100 km/h in 4,7 but then the M5 is faster!
Not sure that faster or slower is even an issue.... It is the overall experience of driving that counts..... The CLS will not handle in the same way.... The steering will be less responsive, etc.
MB claims the CLS55 to be 37lbs lighter than the E55, and this is not significant. Its slightly lower center of gravity might have benefits over the E55 in turns, but not in raw acceleration.
I would expect the M5 to be generally faster than both of them given the extra 40hp, 2 more gears, LSD and a transmission that should have less drivetrain power loss. The relative launch speed will depend on how aggressively BMW programs the LC - I hear mixed reviews here - but after launch the M5 should accelerate faster at all speeds.
While one can argue to merits of low-RPM torque for around-town driving and responsiveness, it is largely irrelevant in race-type situations since you are never at these lower engine speeds.
