Your Schadenfreude - pleasure in other folks troubles - is not justified in my case.
I love the SMG and do not want a manual option. most of the time I leave it in "Drivelogic" semi-auto, but any time I want I can take over.
Even in manual the car will protect you from looking stupid if you slow down to a speed which is too low for the gear. It discreetly makes a down shift for you.

SMG for me!

Well whatever you heard, it is true.

I am trying to be objective about this, until I had the SMG I had only driven automatics as rental cars.
My 6 speed 330Ci was a great car, excellent gearbox and clutch.

In short I was not convinced SMG was the way to go but I wanted the car and there is no manual option in most of the world.

Six months on the only way this SMG and in fact any auto is inferior is when I need to move the car perhaps a few inches.
It is hard to have exactly the control that a clutch and a million plus miles of driving experience gives.
This is specially true reversing into my garage up a 20 millimeter step at the threshold.
I have learned to use the parking brake in that case but a clutch gave more precise speed and distance control below walking pace.

Any other time the SMG does all that I can ask, it gives me more time to concentrate on control and balance not to mention watching the traffic situation. When it comes to shifting it is always quicker and sometimes better than I could manage.

I am very pleased for you that you like your 6 speed car, we both seem to have made the right choices.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to make you feel bad, I have an on-going battle with a good friend of mine who didn't want to wait, and got the SMG. And that's a guy that had the original 1988 M3.

The service guys at my local center said people hate it, it can be so frustrating to parallel park, reversing that is, and people keep engaging & re-engaging, that the computer management system actually goes into a safe mode so the tranny doesn't burn up.

Finally. Add me to the list. M5 delivered (SC BMW Performance Center) today, April 10, 2007. The odometer read 000002. A guy at the Performance Center told me they had used it for about a week for drifting lessons, and had "reset" the odo! Joke, I am sure!

Got my 07 (black on black, same as my 06) about a month ago, 500 miles and no problems. BMWNA let me drive my 06 until my new one came in. I have to give them credit, they have treated me great. BTW, I love my SMG as well.
