Hi Stimmers,

I am expecting delivery of my M5 this month and was wondering if you found answers to your questions?

Thanks,

VJ

Loving the active seats, great fun, loving the M button, being able to make it softer really is a good touch. It is clearly a very powerful car and i think quite deceptive as unlike a lighter sports car, it doesn't feel as fast as it is. I think thats me not being used to heavy, powerful saloon type cars. I also like the standard alloy wheels. i wonder how many people would have fitted these if it had come with others on

Anyway, few issues,

1) When over 100mph (private rd of course) the car vibrates annoingly. My dealer says the below in red - agree?
The car has had all 4 wheels aligned yesterday. This is called a BMW KDS. It is not uncommon for the car to have a slight vibration after a KDS, at high speed.
I would recommend you leave it a week to let the wheels “run in”

2) Why does it sound like a diesel when you turn it on and are stationary?
3) I had 1/4 of a tank left and it told me i was running low on fuel?
4) Can you alter the height of the head up display?
5) Gear box is quite chunky at low speeds in busy traffic.
6) Active Voice thingy doesn't work that well

Minor issues, but from my first afternoon, it seems it really is a great piece of engineering to create something that can do literally anything, so brilliantly.

Thanks

VJ, as you know I have had two new E60 M5's in a 12 month period and venture these as answers to Stimmers.

1. I have never had a vibration in either car over 100mph (silky smooth!). However, I did not exceed 100mph until I had my 1200 mile service. This sounds strange to me.
2. The diesel sound is the VANOS system (Variable Lift and Timing System) when cold. It should disapear when the car has warmed (about 5min). I have also been told you should avoid turning the engine off again until the VANOS unit has warmed. I don't know how true this is!
3. The first fuel reserve does come on just under a 1/4. You need early warning as these things love the juice!!
4. Not that I know of.
5. You either love the SMG or hate it (I love it). You will eventually develop a skill that will make it better ie lifting your foot at just the right time. I find DRIVE mode 4 is probably the best with foot timing around town. However, unless I come to a complete stop I manually pop it into 1st and back to drive.
6. My voice activation works ok providing I have the roof closed! You ned to use the exact phrasing.

I hope this helps.

The Vanos system is part of bmw's emission system and operates on the intake camshaft> The entire system helps with emission and fuel management and helps the engine run smoothly. The sound you hare hearing is normal when the engine is cold. The M3 uses a Double Vanos system
