I've had my M5 for about 5 months now, everything has been awesome with her, not one issue. Ive done all pm work on her since I bought her.
Friday I just done the exhaust, drove her around without issues, parked her in the garage, the wife got home, she wanted to hear the exhaust work I had done, and start up, the engine started having hell idling, then the light of doom came on.
I connected my scan tool to reveal
My stomach got in knots
I just ordered all my stuff to perform my rod bearing swap, hp vanos line, new vanos pump gear set, and piston squirters from fast attack motorsports.
Ive been waiting about a week for them to show up.
I got all vanos solenoid codes at the same time which is telling me that either the HP line failed or the pump failed. I havent had any indication prior to friday of an imminent failure
Just a weird thing to consider, it is not related at all so I don't think it will help your problem, but did you reattach the exhaust electrical grounding strap after you finished your exhaust work?
If the car starts and then goes into limp mode with those codes, you are out of luck the solenoids are probably done. Do you hear any vanos clicking noises from the engine bay? how are the cold starts did you change your oil from castrol to liquimoly or vice versa.
Im still planning on replacing the RBs and hp line, Ive already ordered everything to do it, just waiting for the parts to arrive before I open it up. I do need to buy the test adapter for the vanos line for later testing.
When I do my RBs, Im going to open both pumps to inspect them, if either require replacement, I will replace them.
I just re read your original post. Why are you planning on changing your vanos gear ? 06 was the only one that had a bad gear which should have been fixed per warranty.
Mine was built 10/05 it was built, before the upgraded gearset, I bought the set just in case my pump had the prior design, if it was replaced, Im shipping the gearset back, if it wasnt, then I have it right there when I perform everything
Ok, and I agree with you, but as you said, they "should" have been, but Im not 100% for sure they have been, thats why I bought the nessisary parts to do that update. If I do not need them, I will return them
lucky i came up on this thread currently going through these exact same codes and just like OP stated im almost sure its the HP line but going through the same steps, rod bearings, line and some other items going to be replaced.. OP my Build date is same as yours 10/05 car only has 65k miles on it..
keep us updated or me at least haha but i do feel your pain i just did my 60 maintenance done and spent quite an amount and now just like you this came up:frown
I havent pulled my oil filter open to cut it open as of yet, Im still waiting on all my parts as of yet, before I pull my car back into my shop to start opening her up to assess everything, I want at least have my parts in the ready if I come out lucky, but....... I know how my luck runs so I will be preparing myself to pulling the engine out and rebuilding her
Well.... my nightmare came true, spun bearing on #3, I mic'd the crank .002 and eggshaped the journal, Im in the process of pulling engine, Im trying to find out if a undersized bearing is avalible for the S85 and have the crank turned, if not, Im trying to locate a good used crank, or Ill buy another crank for it
Sorry to see you have to go thru this...
This really should be a bmw recall!!! How can bmw stand tall knowing this is happening to their most loyal customers.
So are blackstone reports worth the time and money to submit. This is not the first case I have read where the Blackstone report was good, but the bearings went out anyway.
I cant say all was bad with pulling the engine out of my car, I now know how much upkeep was actually done before I bought the car, which is a good thing.
Apparently before they traded the car in, they recently replaced the clutch, the flywheel, both throttle actuators, the complete hydraulic unit for the smg transmission. Everything that I had plans to either replace soon or parts that are prone to give problems around this mileage range on a M5, very positive news amongst the problem I currently have with my girl
I'm thinking the history of misfires (cracked valve spring maybe) had a lot to do with it - 93K miles is pretty low for that kind of scoring. I've seen 140K mile cars (2007) with clean cars and my own (101K) has no scoring either.
When did you get out of the coma? Have you missed the dozens of "my S85 spun a bearing at 65K threads?" Plenty of cars made it to high miles but an abnormal amount lost rod bearings far below 100k
Ive been slowly disassembling the S85 out of my car, cleaning and inspecting as I go along, I disassembled the main oil pump and vanos pump and installed new vanos gear at same time, and can give them a clean bill of health to go back in the engine, no damage to either which is a stress relief on me at the moment in the situation Im dealing with
