My M5 journey so far.

I am one of those people that gets very bored with the same car after a while. Normally around 3 years and I'm looking to change to something else. Something faster perhaps. Something more practical? Maybe.
Well, for the last 3 years I've owned a 2006 335d E92.
I went the diesel route for practicality as I was doing lots of long trips at the time but I still wanted a performance car. Couldn't argue with 286bhp and 428ft/lb torque. It was the fastest car I'd ever owned. It swallowed up miles at an alarming pace so easily that I even treated it to a weekend at the Nurburgring, some 1500 miles round trip in all which included a stint on the 155mph limiter on the autobahn. All good fun. (I like to think I'm a perfectionist when it comes to cars. they have to be in absolute peak original condition wherever possible or sensible so the limiter wasn't removed.)
Except it wasn't too fun. Don't get me wrong I was nearly hitting the limiter on the track at times and I know the track perfectly fine. Except, a minibus overtook me. Golf TDI's were overtaking me and those pesky rental Suzuki Swift 1.3's were overtaking me constantly.
I spent the whole drive home considering my options.
I could have modified the 335d, quite a lot actually, but that goes against my perfectionist ways. I could have brought a track focused car instead. Perhaps a Caterham, or an older Lotus Exige.

Anyway, my wife and i are looking to start a family in the near future and I would have to sell the E92 either way to fund the next car. Realistically it had to be a 5 door. But that doesn't mean it has to be slow!
Cue my rushed purchase of an M5.

Actually, this is not the M5 I went to buy. I made arrangements over a 3 week period to pick up an Interlagos Blue / Silverstone Grey Leathered M5 from London. (I live in Northern Ireland) All went well, the financing came in, the travel arrangements were made and I'd even got as far as travelling over to England ready to go pick it up the next day. Then the seller rang me at 1030pm. The dash was a disco. Warning lights everywhere. It needed looking at. The next day he told me a mechanic had diagnosed it as an ABS sensor fault. I wasn't convinced so I rang the garage myself. They informed me it was ABS pump / DSC Controller malfunction and would be somewhere in the region of £3'000 to fix. Arse. Annoyingly after all the travel arrangements and sorting out the transport for the car back to NI I was now without the car.
I checked UK wide adverts, eager to keep the ferry travel the next day, and lo and behold another M5 in the exact same colours (although almost totally standard spec!) came up for sale that very morning. Totally standard was fine for me. It has everything my 335d has and more.

I rushed 100 miles north to view it. In darkness. (I mentioned the rush thing didn't I?) I could instantly see it was going to be a project car. The previous owner has ruined the paint in an attempt to polish it. Scratches and burn marks in it everywhere. The interior is generally fine although grubby and the leather looks more green than grey. These were issues I could sort out easily myself.

The owner informed me it was recently serviced and had a recent clutch and flywheel along with newly throttle actuators by a company local to him near Manchester. None of this he could prove so i took it with a pinch of salt. I would carry it all out over the next year just to be sure.

The owner also mentioned that the front bumper was damaged. It was split in fact under the headlight. He told me an old lady pushed a trolley into it at the supermarket. On inspecting the car as best I could I could tell this was BS as the bumper was damaged in multiple places and didn't line up on the car properly. The wheel arch liners were worn away slightly by the wheels and many bolts for many plastic panels were missing under the bumper. He has clearly crashed it and i very much doubt he could afford to repair it. He had taken £1000 off the price already for this and in reality the car was competitively priced in my opinion. When I test drove it for 30 minutes, everything worked fine. No engine warning lights, full power delivery, every button doing its job except the parking sensors. The parking sensors are showing a fault which I believe is a broken PDC sensor and due to this the hill assist function is also not working. Again, I thought this was something I can easily fix.

So I bought the car and went 1 mile down the road to fill it up for the journey back to NI. Then the dashboard disco came on. Ar*e

Stupidly I drove the car 100 miles home in limp mode. must have averaged about 20mph tops. Hills were almost impossible. Borderline dangerous.
The next day I reassessed my options at my parents house.

And I remembered I had breakdown cover for any vehicle! Should have remembered that the day before really! So, at least I can get the car back to NI. (Back of AA truck!)
The car then went straight to BMW dealership to be repaired. Throttle Actuator Bank 1 + Dignostics = £1400.

So with that repair out the way I decided to make moves to repair the front bumper over the Christmas period. On daylight inspection of the car it was very easy to see the aluminium support bar at the front was caved in. He's crashed this car fairly hard. B**ger again.
I managed to source a new aluminium crash bar quite cheap (£150 on ebay) and I am now in the process of fitting it. So my car currently has the front end off.

Oh yeah, and the headlight felt a little bit loose so I investigated there too. B**ger three.
All in all I am hoping to get the car back together in the morning and then at least I just need to source a new bumper and some missing mounting bolts here and there and the car is cosmetically together again.

As soon as this is all done I can start the rest of the 'To Do' list. It isn't small. First thing, full service on the engine and health check on the clutch / actuators / ABS system etc. Then its all new brakes using standard discs with Ferodo DS2500 pads and stainless braided lines. (One of the only upgrades I actually feel is worthwhile!

So that's my journey so far. A sharp dive into M5 ownership but I absolutely love it when it is working well and would'nt change it for anything. This won't be a 3 year car. This will; be mine until somebody offers me a House as part ex. (Sensible me returns..) Im hoping to update this thread when I can if there is anything interesting to discuss.

Congrats on your M5. Nice write up and hopefully you will have many soul stirring driving days ahead.

drewTT, I know i rushed into it foolishly. I shouldn't have. But the knowledge was in my head that I had already forked out £300 in transport costs to go back to NI with nothing and I didnt like that. Still, £300 is cheaper than the £1600 so far in repairs. A lesson learnt of course.
However, at least I know that BMW are now saying the engine is fine. It should at least last until the clutch fails. Could be 20 miles down the road, or another 20'000 yet. The car is very rarely driven to be fair so I'm not too concerned about the mechanics, except getting it serviced as soon as I can afford it.

Once that is done, the brakes will be changed and I will finish off the cosmetics. it needs a new front bumper as the current one is not repaireable. It will do for now. I am in the process of replacing all the broken parts behind the bumper. The front end is completely bare at the moment. Had to order some stupid M6 rivets from BMW as they have an especially large head on them that holds the headlight lower bracket mounting plate onto the aluminum reinforcement bar. Why BMW couldn't have used a bolt here I will never know. Likewise for the brackets that hold the horns on. Rivets again. Apparently the rivets only have a service life of 24'000 miles according to BMW. So why rivet it in the first place. A bolt would have saved me half an hours drilling and pulling rivets out!

ANyway, after that the mirror glass needs rpelacing on both sides as its orange. How much are these???!!!! Jesus Christ!!!! Trying to source some good used examples but they are the first things to go on a scrap car apparently.

After that it's a wheel refurb with some new tyres and finally the whole body will be taken to the detailers for some paint repair and a damn good polish and wax. I don't think any other parts of the car need painting aside from the front bumper.

The inside just needs a clean and leather restore which i will probably do on boxing day as the wife is at work.

After all that is done I will replace the brakes as mentioned above and sit happy and confident that the car is back in A1 condition. Then i can save up for the inevitable new clutch and flywheel.

I will show you all what i mean tomorrow about the rivets. Stupid pointless rivets!!! lol

Also, Eclectic Taste, no legal recourse. I know this. Like I said, the car was sold as seen and when I saw it, aside from the obvious cosmetics the car worked fine. As soon as the lights came on I practically cried. I immediately rang the seller back and he practically laughed at me down the phone. Obviously he didn't but you could tell by his pathetic excuses and fake shock in his voice that he knew all along. Oh well.

I am an amateur mechanic anyway. Not by trade. I have an offic ejob, but I'm very mechanically minded. I have a very small toolbox in fairness with nearly £1500 worth of tools in it now, all of which have been bought to to specific jobs on my own cars, including engine building. When it comes to mechanics I will happily give anything a go. It's those darn electrics that really grind my gears!!!

Hope all goes well with the car mate. Probably not the best idea to buy one that needs a bit doing to it as these are very expensive cars to repair. I've had mine 3 years and this year it had both throttle actuators which was £2000 and 4 Vanos solenoids plus new diff seals but thankfully it was paid for by my warranty. With the amount your spending on her I hope it was a cheap M5. Problem is you can pay £12K for one then spend £4 or 5 K easy and you'd better off buying a mint one for £16-17 K in the first place.
Mine is Silverstome but I wanted an Interlagos blue one at the time but couldn't find a decent one. Nice colour. What optional extras does it have?

Went to N.I last month for a weeding, stayed in Antrim. Looking forward to going back to have a drive around the coast line.

Simon.

#10 ·
I live near Antirm actually. I love it over here. The coast roads are a reall ynice drive but there are'nt really any faster paced roads that I have found over here yet. They are all just too bumpy to risk your wheels on at the speed limit.

There were maybe 3 or 4 that were Intelragos blue on the market, two of which I now know were in a poor way, but it's the only colour I would have. Even though the wife doesn't like it. I've wanted one this exact colour since they came out. As far as I am aware it has almost no optional extras. It's hard to tell as I haven't really researched what the extras are tbh. I think it's about as standard an E60 M5 as you could get. Maybe the Xenon headlights and the automatic high beam assist were extras. But I don't like the auto headlights. I find it ridiculous that to turn the auto headlights off, I have to first turn them on to full manual before I can dip them again. Wasting a small amount of time that I am already blinding the oncoming traffic. Surely the operation could have been reversed? A simple on/off for manual high beams and a double press for auto?

In reality I will be doing £4000 worth of repairs for about £2300 by doing it all myself and sourcing non-consumable parts through salvage. The aluminium bar has cost me £160 plus the £7 from the main dealers to replace the pesky rivets on the back of it. It has cost me nothing but time to fit it all myself. I'm finding it a very easy job to take the whole front end off to be honest. The car is just sitting there now with no bumper, crash bar, horns, lights, air ducts and plastic shielding for the radiator and oil cooler. Once i have picked up the rivets in the morning I believe I will have it back together in about an hour.

#11 ·
As your near Antrim, the do we went to was at the Galgorm spa and resort hotel in Ballymena. Fantastic place.

Once it's all back together you will love it, the V10 sound at full chat is epic. I can recommend the fast attack motorsports map from Jim Colley on M5 Board, I have it and the car feels smoother and faster still.
Not sure what you mean about the lights, I leave mine on auto and the dip beam comes on when it thinks it's dark enough and I have to work main beam manually.

#12 ·
Mine has high beam assist. I think thats what its called. Headlights come on automatically, but when you want high beam you push the stalk forward and the headlight symbol comes up on the dash with a small 'A' next to it. Sometimes the high beam comes on instantly, other times it takes ages for the sensor to recognise the nead for them to be on, so even when you press it your still driving on dipped beam for a while. To get over this, you have to press the stalk twice to put it on manual high beam and then I can use it as I want. It's a pain in the *** really. Same as the auto wipers. Mine seem to work on steady speed for a few seconds and then they just go mental and are on constantly, regardless of how much its raining. When i turn the auto wipers off, the adjuster switch on the stalk doesn't seem to do anything to adjust the wiper speed.

At least I still have the 335d as a back up, until somebody buys it.

No worries drewTT. I've got friends with OBDII software and they just help with the electrics side of things. I should probably invest in some myself.
Theres a lot of things that come up on their OBD readers though that my car doesn't even have. It comes up with sun blind faults and rear heated seat faults... which my car doesn't even have. Is this just a case of the car being programmed in to have it all from the factory but not actually getting the tick on the options list? Either way there is a lot of faults that come up on it that I just don't worry about. As long as the mechanical side of things is fine I'm happy for now.

Ok so a quick update, not much has happened since I last posted to be honest. I purchased some new OEM rivets for the crash bar / front bracket and I purchased a rivet gun to fit them. Problem was the rivet gun wasn't big enough for the 6mm rivets. I also couldn't source one locally and at this time of year I won't get one online before I need the car back together again. Also, I can't take the car to BMW because it has absolutely no front end on it whatsoever and I'm too tight to have it towed / pay for BMW to do the work.
So, to resolve the issue I have simply put nyloc nuts and bolts where the rivets should be. On looking at the way the rivets are put in, there is plenty of room for nuts and bolts to go, and also I have no idea why BMW even riveted it in the first place when the bolts work fine.
Anyway, the crash bar and front brackets are back together and the car can be completely rebuilt now. However, when i was taking it apart I noticed the right hand side (UK drivers side) headlight lower bracket was smashed at the back. So I've ordered a new one from BMW and am waiting for that to be delivered.
I was going to get the car 90% rebuilt today ready for the new headlight lower bracket but unfortunately the UK is now being hit with Storm Barbara and I simply cannot get out to work on the car as my street is flooding and the winds are too high. I don't want to risk getting water into the electrics so it will have to wait. The wife has got plenty more hours at work over the next week or so so there will be chance to get out and do it either tomorrow or boxing day. Bah Humbug.

#16 ·
Ok, So, Storm Barbara has finally left and the festivities are over for a week. The front of my car was almost fully rebuilt on christmas eve. I do know how to treat myself. The new crash bar is in, the new headlight lower bracket is in, the polystyrene bar protectors are now correctly installed instead of just sitting at the bottom of the bumper over the brake air ducts and also when it was apart I noticed even the intake air ducts weren't correctly installed into the air boxes. So that is all remedied. Job done until I can afford to stump up for the new bumper. Or so I though....
It turns out even the bumper mounting plates (on the actual bumper edges) are broken, which goes a small way to explain why the bumper wasn't aligned correctly on the car. Time to order some new ones then. The garage is now closed so this is likely going to be a new year thing.
Also, when I reinstalled the headlights, with the new lower bracket. I noticed that the third headlight mounting bolt behind the actual lights at the bottom, wasn't even there. So those are on the order list as well.
To fully complete the front end rebuild, I also need to get two new bolts for the lower right hand side (UK drivers side) cover, which sits under the car next to the engine cover tray (Small triangular plastic piece) as these were also missing. This brings ANOTHER problem.
They were missing because, well, the previous owner was obviously a dick and put larger wheels with the wrong offsets etc on. So the wheels have completely worn through both of the wheel arch guards, where the bolts screw into. So I need two new wheel arch guards as well.

But then..... The car is 100% rebuilt and in good condition again until the service and paintwork gets seen to!

The project continues.

Also, when I first got the car i started using it as a daily driver, doing short trips to work etc. (Only when the engine was warmed up on the drive though). In order to save some more outlay for now I have decided to garage it and only use it once or twice a month. So hopefully the car has a bit of time to get some love and attention and come out in the summer in perfect condition.

Ok, so here are the pictures for the last few posts of mine on this thread.

Eventually I got the car fully stripped down at the front end on Christmas eve. (Wife was at work anyway!) See first pic below.

As i mentioned above, the crash bar was riveted to the headlight mounting bracket. I thought they were a fairly standard size rivet but they were not. I ordered the correct rivets from BMW but then didn't have the right size gun to install them. So I gave up, and it has been put back together with nuts and bolts. You can see in the 4th picture that there are recesses in the chassis legs that allow the fitment of bolts so why BMW chose rivets with everything else bolted on I do not know.

The 5th picture just shows where the air duct coming from the front had detached from the air box. Behind the slam panel. Which was annoying as I had to practically remove the entire air box to be able to put it back together properly without taking anything more off the car.

So although the car is now back together so it can be driven, it is only a temporary thing until some more parts arrive and I can afford to replace and respray the actual bumper itself. I have ordered all the bolts and mounting plates to fit the new bumper, and these will help the current bumper sit properly on the car for the time being. (Part number 17, both sides, on the 6th picture. All of the mounting kit shown in the 7th picture. And finally the two missing screws from the triangular plastic cover, part 23 at the bottom left of picture 8.)

I wanted to replace the wheel arch guards as they are ruined from the previous owner, however they cost £165 ($200~ish) each. I don't have that money right now so these will have to wait until another time.

On putting the car back together, a number of warning lights came on in relation to the headlights, and the passenger side low beam isn't working at all. I'm hoping this is merely a failure on my part to clean the contacts up during the re-install and that with a bit of movement these will be right again. The car is now sat on the drive with a battery optimiser on, hoping that the electrics can be given a fresh bit of health having been sat there for two weeks in pieces!

Until the next parts arrive in the new year..... thanks for reading. Have yourselves a fantastic new year.

Looks like the PO wired something to the horn as seen in your one picture. I wonder what.

What did you pay for this car and how many miles? Did I miss that info somewhere?

#21 ·
I also noticed the wires had been spliced into. I will probably look at replacing the whole thing at some point with OEM ones when I can afford to replace the bumper itself. That way i know everything is fixed and hopefully it won't need to come off again for a while and I can get the car detailed and paint corrected.

#20 ·
I'm holding back on how much I paid. It was too much and I'm embarrassed lol. It has 81'000 miles on it.

On another note, today I went to check up on the car, start it up and let it run for a bit on the drive. It threw up a Dipped Beam Headlight Malfunction light and also the Adaptive Headlights Malfunction Warning Light.
Went and checked and sure enough the Passenger side low beam headlight is not working.
So, the bumper is back off. I have switched the headlights over whilst they were off the car and the problem does not migrate, and the passenger side headlight works fine on the drivers side. It just looks weird..... (Joke)

This is not a bad thing and it is.

On closer inspection, I can actually see that only one of the mounting points on that headlight are actually intact. I didn't even notice the second lower one was completely missing. Looking at both sides, it seems that only two bolts per side were actually in use. The one side I have already ordered the parts to rectify this. The other side I fear I will have to bite the bullet and purchase a new (or second hand) headlight. Another £200 then....
So for now, the car can be put back together and driven in the daylight only. Bummer.
Still, at least I am getting to know this car very well, and I know the entire front end will be in great condition when I am finished with it. Hopefully that will help it get some of its value back.

Just read this start to finish and whilst it's great you are DIYing this - it's a shame that so much is required just to bring it upto scratch. In my view buying a car should never be so cumbersome. I love tinkering with my M6, heck it's the 1st air ride equipped M6 in the UK but even then I fear the costs of repairs as I decided to heck with the warranty!

Have owned mine since Apr 2016 and so far I've had the clutch, the clutch position sensor, ball pin, fork and flywheel done and 2 oil changes all in for £2,500

Other than that it's been a peach to own and drive and that's what buying/owning cars should really be about.

I hoep your issues come to an end and you really start enjoying the car - these V10s are so good when they're alive!

Thanks Awbimmer. It's a ball ache for sure but at least I know the car myself now. Looking at the markets at the moment the car seems to be holding a good enough price to make this all worthwhile. It's just a shame that so much needs changing on the front of this car. I was hoping it wasn't as bad as this!

The car is about to go into storage for a few months. I am looking to save up a few thousand to have the front end finished and also to service the car and replace the brakes.
I need to investigate why the front wheels have rubbed through the wheel arch guards also, and replacing those is nearly £350 on their own.I don't have the money for that right now.

If only I could get my 335d sold already!

Sounds like a plan buddy. I came from an e92 335d.. highly modified and that car was literally bullet proof. I did a lot of preventative work that didn't need doing but just wanted to do for peace of mind but that car was everything and more and I'd still say it was a better everyday car than the m6 I have.... but the m6 exhaust especially with its eisenmann race exhaust is like a drug!

Hopefully you'll get your woes put the way and start enjoying the car

All of the above is legit except for my car being almost completely standard. My 335d is bullet proof. Mechanically it has never let me down in any major way but I was spending a few thousand pounds each year in preventative maintenance. I changed the brakes every 18 months as they were upgraded and once they were worn I could feel them overheating after a quick run round the coast etc.
The intercooler hose had a very minor leak so I replaced the whole lot. That's a very well known issue on them anyway.
The steering column lock failed on me, but I didn't have common lock-out issues with it, it just simply threw a light up and although it was telling me the car could not be started it actually did and drove fine. I had that replaced anyway.
The wheels have been welded twice as they are literally weak as cheese, again a common problem.
The front wishbones and trailing arms have been replaced as have all four wheel bearings.
And of course it has had regular servicing from BMW.
The paint has also been reconditioned, in as much as the front and rear bumpers have been repainted and some very minor scratches all over have been polished out. The whole car has been completely detailed and the paint is in perfect smooth condition having been clayed and waxed.
I just wish it would sell already! It's pretty much been for sale for 10 weeks now and I've only had 1 phonecall about it and the guy was just fishing for a deal anyway!

The M5 exhaust note. I wish there were more tunnels nearby lol.

Anyway, back on topic. The nuts and bolts I ordered arrived today, along with a quote for the new passenger side headlight. £940. Arse. A second hand one will have to do.

Then its just a case of buying the arch liners and new bumper and the repairs are complete. On to the servicing!....

Thanks for the continued interest in my posts guys. I hope I can repay the favour and help out where I can.

cold m3 - Notice how I couldn't go for long knowing the horn wiring wasn't correct LOL!

So a friend of mine plugged his OBDII reader into the car today to see if he could diagnose the dipped beam fault. It comes up with a fault on the ACL unit. A new one is relatively cheap and easy to install but will then need coding in.
This weekend I will be taking the headlight back out and taking off the ACL unit to inspect it for any obvious signs of damage. I have heard that the wiring is prone to corroding inside it and the movement of me taking out the headlight may have just upset it enough to go tits up. I will also double check that the headlight is assembled correctly, although it wasn't taken apart so I'm almost certain my efforts to remedy the situation will be futile. But I can at least try.

I have now managed to convince my wife it is not the new 'family' car which appeased her initially. It is now my 'hobby' and I spend as much on it as she does on hair, make-up, nails other pointless cosmetics and random crap for the house. (Who needs 8'000 cushions anyway!!!!!!)

Wish me luck.

The car can be driven as it is, just not at night due to lack of headlight. I'm choosing not to drive it so that I can save the £60+ a week on fuel costs to actually put towards the repair costs.
The bolts at the front end are holding it all together, the bumper just doesn't line up very nicely until I put the new mounting brackets on it. Saving that for when I get the new bumper anyway!

Took a colleague to the airport the other day and you have to drive through the only tunnel in Northern Ireland to come out of the airport. Let's just say he heard me leaving.......

Great News!!

Well it is for me.
The car is going in on Saturday to an Ex BMW specialist to have the headlight issue fixed. Potentially cheap which is good.
The only other electrical issue is the PDC fault, and I've just managed to fix that with a £14 ($18) new sensor off eBay. So the system is now fully functional. As soon as the headlight problem is solved the car will be 100% mechanically and electrically sound, if not cosmetically yet.

However, (as always) I just started it up on the drive, admittedly the first time it's had a decent run up to temperature for 6 weeks, and the service light has come on. Engine Oil service. No big drama really. (Yes, the car was plugged in to my battery optimiser the whole time so the battery is still good and fresh lol)
On that note though, seeing as I'm not entirely sure when the last owner did a GOOD service on it, I have had one priced up, including a 100% brake systems change.

For the following:

Oil Filter,
Oil,
Air Filters x 2,
Micro-Filter (Pollen/Cabin) x 2,
Spark Plugs x 10,
Front Brake Discs + Pads,
Rear Brake Discs + Pads,
Front brake wear sensors x 2,
Rear brake wear sensor,
Handbrake Shoes,
Handbrake shoes service kit (Springs etc),
Gearbox Fluid and
Differential Fluid,

I have been quoted £1877 ($2350) from BMW themselves to supply the parts.

Is that decent? It seems like it's a good price to me, all for genuine BMW parts too?
That doesn't include fitting, but that is all a very easy list of jobs for me to work through one weekend and do it all myself for free. If I do ask the garage to do it for me they have told me they will give me 20% off labour costs as I am a regular customer, with deep pockets lol.

That being said, the guy who is fixing my headlight issues will do all of it for £25hr ($31hr). So lets see how lazy I am feeling in a couple of weeks time when all the parts are ordered in.

I can't wait to have a fully serviced, electrically perfect, mechanically fine car again. For so long......
