While retrofitting E6X M5 drivetrain to my E61 I couldn't help but notice how heavy the OEM M5 components are, especially the drive shaft. Randy Wei has done a nice job showing the performance potential of light weight mods and unsprung weight on this platform and to be quite honest I am surprised that the previous discussions and GBs never got traction considering how much money most M5 owners dump into their cars.
I recently saw the MFactory has produced a CF shaft for the E9X M3 and is currently looking for testers. For those of you who are unaware the flanges, CVs, guibo, etc are the same between the S85 and S65 platforms which means it is likely MFactory would just need to take their current CF M3 design and alter the shaft lengths for the M5. So if there is still interest in a mod like this amongst M5 owners, now may be a good time to inquire. The pricing (especially for testers) seems very reasonable, I will have paid nearly that much to source my used M5 driveshaft and have it rebuilt and custom lengthed for my N54 powered E61.
Once my shaft is back from the local shop I will weight it but I think the oem unit is about 30lbs and Mfactory says their unit is 11lbs.
Other than owning one of their chromoly single mass flywheels for my personal build, I am not affiliated with MFactory, I just wanted to pass this info along.
