What causes the idrive to start rebooting incessantly? Mine started

doing this yesterday, and since being told by jcolley that our cars do not have an MPM module, which can be the cause in non-M E60s apparently, I am now looking for other possible causes. Thanks.

Mine did this intermittently for a year, then non stop now. Looked all over the internet, and found that this is a common problem. Nobody seems to have an answer as to what causes the problem. The answer is always to replace the CCC. I tried having my CCC software updated at a local indy shop with no success. Was quoted $1700 parts and labor for a new one. Bought a used one from an 08 M5 online, and will try to swap it out.

I was quoted, from my local dealer, $890.00 for the CCC; plus 3hrs labour to install and code for my e93. I find it odd that yours is so much more. Realoem has the same costs for the reman'ed units.

There are several issues that will cause this. In my case, the motherboard within the CCC module had failed. Troy Jeup sold me a wrecked unit with an intact motherboard. I ended up swapping out the MB and the PS from the wrecked unit into mine. A little coding later, BOOM, all is well and my work phone can stop substituting as my media center. Perhaps Jim aka jcolly could get you a working motherboard/power supply. That is, if you deem this to be your issue. I can almost guarantee that the stealer is going to want to replace the entire unit. Do you have any other problems with your car right now or any other issues with the CCC before the rebooting? My problems started with the unit loosing Bluetooth for a few days, then the audio quit working, then finally the rebooting began and the error code "increased battery discharge" overnight which ended up being the CCC not fully shutting down and left the cooling fan running.

The CCC's cooling fan is pretty ineffective, as a result everything overheats in the CCC. The main issues the BGA chips on the motherboard whose solder joints weaken, or the PS caps failing.

A few months ago I was at the dealer and asked for prices for CCC CIC and NBT, they said they'd stopped supplying remfd CCCs. There's no guarantee a second hand one is going to last much longer either, hence the decision to stick an NBT in - well worth it if keeping the car for a few years or more, it brings the infotainment system into the 22nd century!

Is there any way to desolder BGA chips and re solder them? Does anyone have a picture of the suspect chip? My CCC died a week ago. Luckily i was able to get one online from an 08 M5. Plugged it in and worked without any coding. Only thing missing was my HD radio. Not a big loss. As a result, i have my old one to experiment on. If anyone can direct me to the problem area I'll take it apart and see whats going on.

I have a thread that has a bunch of pictures of when I rebuilt mine, but here are a few that highlight what you're asking for. Sorry for the crappy 5S cell phone pics. The best way to reflow the solder, would be on a flow bench. There is also a noticeable difference between the pre-LCI motherboard and the LCI one. It seems the LCI version has integrated RAM whereas the pre-LCI has a removable Samsung stick. I only assume this since the LCI version doesn't have the removable stick. I am also attaching a pic of the capacitors on the PS that were mentioned above. Good Luck!

I ordered a used CCC one from BPM for $1200, well $1300 after coding and shipping and I'm screwed if it breaks. Hopefully it doesn't break too soon. I cheaped out and didn't get the CIC. I just couldn't see dropping $2600+ on it for my car. All I want it to do is play XM and let me adjust the stupid climate controls.

I just started experiencing this this morning. Hud, idrive screen would turn and off. Each time it came back on a new error would show. It said stuff like dsc malfunction, abs malfunction. Then it would freak out again and come back fine. This was all within a 1 minute period. Music would stop and start too during this. Luckily I had just left for work so was able to swap cars.

The thing is I have a 2010 with the new idrive system at the time. You guys think this could be the same thing? I had the battery replaced when I bought the car in January so I know it's not that.

Edit: Just pulled the codes and got no less than 11 of them. 9 are over voltage related and two for a coolant sensor. So it seems my issue is the voltage regulator and a coolant sensor lol. Thanks to the post mentioning the alternator. It led me to research the forum for it, which led to the voltage regulator discussions.

This is my observation regarding the CCC. Hope it helps.
Cause of incessant reboot : the capacitor, condenser doesn't collect enough voltage to run the unit, due to it's short life. It seems to be related to the weak temperature resistance. The capacitor is defective. To store the required voltage, the capacitor automatically calls the system and pull the electricity but it cannot reach the threshold or it drops due to sudden deprivation?? Reboot and it may lead to battery drainage. (I suspected the cooling problem and fan operates, but it seems not correct diagnosis, so revised as above).

Solution : the capacitors need to be replaced, or whole unit to be changed in the worst case.

The CCC & Radio unit is connected to fuse no.13 23 40. Until the ccc repair is done, I decide to get the fuse #40. But if is disconnected, rr camera and rear park sensor sound also is cut. So I prolonged the wiring outside with serial connected fuse and the toggle sp switch. When it is on the camera and signal is on, and manually switch off with ignition off.

Conclusion : poor system design of thr CCC unit. The life expectancy or heat resistance factor should have been considered with relevant level. Adding one more complaint about bmw cars.
