Videos from another Shift S3ctor 1/2 Mile Airstrip Attack event. I'll admit this time the videos probably won't be as exciting for you guys because the primary objective of me attending this time was to race against my buddy Joel's M4. We've been wanting to race for a while and we had only gotten highway pulls in and we know my car is faster from a highway pull, but never got to race from lower speed rolls or from a dig. Joel's M4 has ESS tune, full Akrapovic exhaust (downpipes, midpipe, mufflers), GruppeM intakes, Evolution Racewerks Chargepipes, BMW Performance Seats (saves a lot of weight), Brembo BBK, and 19" BBS FI-R wheels (extremely light wheels).

So I raced Joel five times, Ram @allmotor_2000 and his F10 M5 once (doesn't really count as a race since we always 'race' each other for the first run of the day to gauge how well our cars were running and to make tweaks if necessary), a ESS VT2-625 E92 M3, and a JB4 tuned M4.

My car was running pretty consistent getting 145-147mph traps in the 1/2 mile. My trap speeds were always 1-2mph faster than Joel's, even though in some races we crossed the finish line at pretty much the same time.

What was cool this time was that Shift S3ctor started using RFID tags to track each car and its trap speed. After each race, the trap speed would be emailed to the driver so that they wouldn't have to go get a time slip. Pretty cool! It was a little buggy at times, but worked well most of the time.

What I didn't like this time was that the staff didn't write the HP on each car's window like they had in the past so I had no idea how powerful other people's cars were. Also, because Shift S3ctor hosts a separate Exotics 1/2 Mile Airstrip Attack now, there were very few exotics there (two McLarens and one Huracan). Fewer BMWs and GTRs, a lot more Corvettes. It was also unfortunate that Camaro, which went 175mph, lost control and flipped and caught on fire. The driver was okay, but unfortunately the passenger was injured and had to be sent to the hospital. Hope they are okay. There was a pretty heavy crosswind the entire day and the Camaro's parachute got caught and threw it off.

Enjoy the videos!

Oh, one thing that really surprised me from this event is that the new F8x M3/M4s will not heatsoak! Their cooling is too damn efficient.

BTW - I was still running my Evolve Stage 3 tune for this event because my Fast Attack Motorsports tune wasn't ready. Next event then!

Race 1 - Randy vs Ram

As mentioned before, Ram and I always do the first run of the day together. He found out from our run that he had too much E85 in his mixture and was getting power cut in 5th gear so he slammed the brakes and I passed him :p. Congrats on winning the BMW/AMG class with your 170mph pass, Ram! Very impressive seeing that your car wasn't running well and you still took 1st place. Can't wait to see what type of monster it is when it is running at 100%!

Race 2 - Randy vs Joel (round 1)

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7t9HaJ02ChQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Here starts the series of back to back races against Joel. First one from a dig and Joel got a little squirly in the beginning as you can see so I beat him by a bit.

Race 3 - Randy vs Joel (round 2)

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/r8-aDZJesA8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
From a 40mph roll. We were pretty dead even, but then Joel shifted early and I pulled ahead.

Race 4 - Randy vs Joel (round 3)

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GJ0U2XPg5vU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
From a 40mph roll. Pretty much dead even.

Race 5 - Randy vs Joel (round 4)

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UHDL_dQDvug" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Race from a dig. Pretty much dead even again. Joel had figured out how to control all that torque.

Race 6 - Randy vs Nick

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Q93KVDPY4VE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Race from a dig. First time racing a ESS VT2-625 E92 M3 (I've previously raced 625 e90s and e93s). I screwed up on my start. This guy said he was trapping about 153mph whereas I only bested a 147mph. This race I trapped 145mph.

Race 7 - Randy vs Joel (round 5)

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Eh_cmYL3orA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Race from a dig. Final race with Joel. His tires hooked up perfectly and he took a slight lead in the beginning and I couldn't close the gap. The nose of my car was right at the tail of his though.

Race 8 - Randy vs Ando

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/qtIWTuACR3c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Race from a dig. Final race of the day. The JB4 M4 was nuts. He lowered his boost in 1st and 2nd gear because there was too much torque, and then in 3rd his 27psi kicked in and he just took off. He told me he was trapping between 154-156mph. Thanks to @5soko for figuring out that the 27psi boost can only come if running a race gas or meth map. My guess is Ando was running race gas because if he was running meth I would've assumed he would've told me. Most people run race gas at SS events (myself included).

Awesome vids. Yeah turbo cars will always win at the drag because it's very easy to mod the turbos and pump up the boost. We have to do with what we have, no adjustments. Impressive never the less.

What makes this M5 stage 4, headers? I thought more or less officially mods capped at stage 3, 3 being the race track day stuff. Stage 2 were highest power gain street legal mods, and stage 1 were the small bolt-ons. I haven't even heard of stage 4.

Yeah, turbo life makes it very easy to gain power...

Evolve's stage 4 consists of their Long Tubular Headers, Eventuri Intakes, and tune. It's just their naming scheme for the package of the 3 components.

Nice Randy. I see the Prince was running well this weekend. You notice any difference with your 18s this year?

I ran them at the SS event last October. As you know with unsprung weight savings the 18s definitely made a difference.

The temps this time were comparable to back in October (although it was cooler towards the latter half of the day), but my trap speeds were a bit faster and very consistent between 145-147. They were also using different equipment so who knows.

Very strong crosswind also this time.

Thanks, Jim! We already know of at least one area we can try to work on to get a little more power :)

I don't lift on shifts. Pedal to the metal. I did just get a new OEM clutch and flywheel installed about 700 miles before I attended the event, if that matters...

Great vids and write-up Randy! This thread makes me want to open my wallet and get some more power mods until I realized all the money was spent on maint & repairs. :(

Yeah...my car just went through an unexpected $$$ maintenance period right before the event. I had just spent $1400 on some maintenance and some minor modifications (remove secondary cats, adjustable end links, install BAVSOUND Ghost Subs, oil change and diff fluid change), and then all of a sudden I'm told my clutch is slipping and needs to be replaced (at 96k miles on the original clutch is was definitely time) and then I get hit with a $3k bill parts and labor...

Gotta pay to play! Once your car is up and running in tip top shape we gotta get you out to one of these events! What are we on now, 4th time? hahaha. Hopefully the next event in October!!

Thanks for posting Randy - great seeing you and Joel again (Joel - thx for the gas since my ill-prepared self ha the wrong mixture!).

You guys are always a class act and fun to hang out. Hopefully next time I have time to work the bugs out beforehand and have better videos!

Your E60 is in my opinion the best setup NA V10 I have come across and very impressive to keep up and beat SC'd E60's and some E92's as well.

Time for some NOS :)

Always a pleasure, Ram! Thank you for the kind comments. NOS....thinking about it...maybe something not too crazy like a 50-100shot :p

Can't wait to see you and your car next time (and hopefully it will be in tip top shape!!)
