Hello,

Recently I was messing around with INPA and decided to be adventurous. I attempted to reset adaptation for the SMG.

When INPA indicates versions mismatch, which should have been my first clue to Stop. but i didnt. I now have a code 4f67, for clutch engagement out of tolerance. I figured it could have a been a software issue since i have euros smg. I took it to the dealership, where they are claiming that my entire transmission needs to be replaced. (wow). I looked into the fourms, tis, and where i could find information and concluded that i need to drop the rear end of the tranny to replace the clutch output cylinder, or the clutch position sensor, can any one tell me if i am on the right track with the parts that needs replacement for code 4f67

thanks in advance

Nothing needs to be replaced, your dealer has idiots for technicians.

From the SMG menu that you were in, you can run the adaptation process for the SMG which is all you need. For the SMG, "Adapatation" is a very poor choice of wording for the English translation, since there isn't a damn thing in the SMG which actually "adapts". It really should have been called "calibrations", since all it does is calibrate the 7 solenoid valves and the PLCD positioning.

When you "reset adaptations", you erased the calibrations. All 4F67 means is that the "adaptation" process has not been performed for the transmission. Did the "clutch position out of tolerance" error come up when trying to adapt it? If so, the only problem is likely your slave cylinder, this has been known to prevent adaptation from completing properly giving that out of tolerance error.

Hey jcolly, I'm new to the forums I noticed you are the go to guy on the M forums. you have helped me out many times before with your reply's on other forums. I am having a problem with my 2006 BMW M5 SMG. I'm going to start from the beginning, a few weeks ago I received a red cog and codes 4FA0, 4F80, 4F80, 4F82, 4F83, 520A. The car would go into gear but it would dump the clutch (jerk) and shift extremely delayed. I cleared the codes and the only code that stayed was 4FA0 and the red cog. So I parked it. after letting it sit for a day it seamed to go back to normal after I cleared the codes again, the red cog went out and no more codes displayed. I drove it around for a week and something just felt off at a low RPM it would pulsate taking off as if the clutch was slipping and the transmission would just get confused sometimes. it was just not the same as before. So I parked it again, did some research on the problem and I came up with the PLCD sensor.
THE NEW PROBLEM I recently replaced the clutch position sensor and I installed INPA to
"re adapt" the transmission and clutch. after carefully following the adapt instructions you stated on another forum, my car has the red cog stuck on in the dash saying "Transmission! Preform Adaption" "Clutch! Adaptation active" and trouble code the code 4F67. In INPA it says "the clutch position is outside the permissible tolerance." I have tried to re do the adaption and even delete and reinstall INPA but nothing is working. I am not sure when the clutch has last been changed as I bought the car a year ago it has 122K on it now. I am unsure on what to do now other than pull the trans and inspect clutch and slave cylinder. I would greatly appreciate your help and advice!

Hi j colley, thank you for responding.

yes, the "adaptaion" failed because of clutch engagement out of tolerence, however no other codes. prior to this, a undershoot error would come and go....
as you mentioned, the clutch slave may be the culprit, it would require the complete removal of the the transmission?

quick update,

I have removed the transmission and found that the slave cylinder was indeed the problem. installed new slave and topped off chf-11s. and cleaned the inner housing since, looked nasty inside, i guess dust and grease and possibly motor oil? and remounted tranny. will reinstall drive shaft tomorrow, and hopefully i will be able to complete the adaptation. does anyone know if Dis or INPA will complete the adaptaion without the exhaust installed? I dont want to put everything back and having to remove again.

Glad you found what looks like the problem. One step in the DIS adaptation routine is to start engine and leave it running in neutral. I'm not sure how it will run without the exhaust, or what faults may occur (if any) with exhaust sensors, but it will be LOUD!

Update

Adaptation Success via INPA. pheeeww..

however, new problem. as i posted in another members thread, i mentioned that i had ripped off the wring harness and had to repair it. while doing so, i noticed that the wring harness #3 is partially exposing copper. but i cannot find the part no. from anywhere. does bmw sell replacement for this wiring harness or >>??? Now everytime the pump primes, i smell something burinig, either the electri motor is dying or the the exposed wires are touching each other.

Update*

So i have installed a new pump motor, and a used actuator block i purchased from fourm member. Now my issues are MAJOR Hydraulic fluid spills when 1) brake pedal depressed (clutch disengage?) 2) depressurize in Inpa 3) bleed system.

No Transmission COG, but it will not shift into gear. does the new actuator block need to be coded?

I am in the process of removing the transmission, for the third time. would any one have any suggestions on where the leak is coming from, it seems like its spilling out from uptop....

Got your email a few minutes ago, sorry I missed it earlier. I'll reply here for future reference of members.

- So the first part would lead me to think that the slave cylinder lines were missing a crush washer or something. When pressurizing the slave, fluid leaks out. There is no pressure on that slave hard line at any time other than when the clutch is being disengaged. Did it get removed at all?

- Second thought at first made me think the reservoir was overfilled. When bleeding pressure down, you're emptying the accumulator. This fluid has to go somewhere, so if the reservoir was overfilled, it would go out the vent on top. However after thinking about this, the process INPA uses to reduce pressure is to turn the pump off and cycle the clutch a few times to drop pressure, so the leak could be from the part discussed above.

I would say check all 4 crush washers on the slave cylinder hard pipe. There should be one on the top and the bottom of both banjo bolts, on the back of the slave and the top of the block.

Thanks for the reply, I double checked the crush washers and they were fine but lost them in the process.!!! went to the local STEALERSHIP and they wanted $40 per washer? and online vendoes are approx $20.00 per washer????!!! are there alternatives to this?

Thanks, I ended up buying 4 washers and one filler plug, total cost was $106. Wow. I replaced the washe's at the slave, and filled the expansion tank. Bleed the system and now the pump is able to achieve to proper psi. However I am still dripping hydraulic fluid. I am.hoping that it's due to over filling.

UPDATE.

So per Jcolley's advice, I bled the hell out of the actuator block and clutch, at least 5 times, finally i was able to complete the adaptation.. HOWEVER the car shift that crap, delay from 1st to 2nd gear. and each gear change i can hear and feel "clunk" I don't want to try and re-adapt risking code 4f67 again..
