Thinking about trading in my 08' M5 for a 11' X5 M...

Would you do it if you had the opportunity? Torque and HP boost. 555hp on the X5 M. But lose out on the sportiness of the E60?

Cant seem to make up my mind.

The X5M will be a less engaging and more relaxed car. It will also be slightly slower than the M5.

I'm in the same bout as you. I'm considering a '12 F10 M5, that a friend of mine is willing to sell to me under market value - that and the fact it's actually more comfortable (198cm tall) than the E60 are the only reasons I'm considering selling my E60.

As a prior e53 owner and current Range Rover Sport owner, I'd take an X5M over the RRS any day. Don't get me wrong... the RRS is nice but it's an SUV with a nice interior. Doesn't have the roots that the bimmer has and you feel it. Can only imagine how much more that's accentuated with the M version.

I see the OP kept the e60 but it'd be a tough call. Personally since I have an SUV in the stable it'd be a no-deal for me but if that weren't the case it'd be tough. Pretty sure the e60 would win out though given the sound of the engine.

You know you want to come back to the dark side...:devil.

I figured.

BTW, I didn't pull the trigger on this, I decided to keep my M5.

I have both E60 & E70. 60k on my M5 and 70k on my X5. Both vehicles have had minimal issues. I notice people on forums who have probably never owned either vehicle say both the E60 or E70 are a nightmare. These are not Lexus and yes some people have had issues like any other high performance German vehicle but they have both been solid performers as long as they are well maintained. I don't own an X5M but an Xdrive 30i and it has been very reliable. I would like and have considered moving to an X5M but with no 3rd row it's not an option for me.

Turbochargers, bah humbug. Turbochargers in the center of the "V", double bah humbug.

Enginerdy: Why BMW's N63 twin-turbo V8 eats batteries

I'm not lucky enough to own either one, but I work on both for a living, and have driven both on a race track. They are both magnificent to drive.

But if you think the V10 M5 is expensive and frustrating to maintain and fix, just wait until you own the X5M! Twenty-one coolers, as I recall! You'd think that in such an enormous beast, it would be easy to fit stuff in, so that someone could work on it....HAH!

And the M5 doesn't even have to play engine sounds through the stereo like the turbo cars generally do.....

Certainly, you'll be a lucky man, whichever you own....but I'll take that N/A V-10, any day...

Well said by someone that should know better than any of us.

And you want to add heat to those 21 coolers with a tune, how many of them should be up sized?

A better question is there single stitch of performance data on the world wide internet beyond a 5-second dyno pull?

How many actually have the tune and the balls and pocket book to test it on a v-box 0-150 mph? no one according my search.

Thus my claim the only useful comparison is stock to stock per Car & Driver test data.

Cars are owned for their purpose in our lifes. Have the range rover vogue supercharged and will keep that any day over the x5M cos its more spacious and way ahead when it comes to luxury. When i want a sports car i sit in the e60 m5 and enjoy every bit of it. Sports SUVs are not true sports cars but utility cars that can get to point A faster than a standard SUV.

Rather than shifting to X5M , do what I'm doing , recently I found 2003 X5 with very low milage for around 5k and I'm considering buying it for DD , Xdrive or 4WD is a must for me since I love to drive to beaches or for a small hill climb with the girlfriend on a saturday morning , p/s the 3.0i X5 are pretty reliable and amazing utility vehicles for groceries and transporting heavy stuff.

Came really close to pulling the trigger on a beautiful and very well optioned X5M... magnificent vehicle but hated that the transmission wasn't built or rated for towing. I don't tow a lot, probably 3 times a year but to get another SUV for that reason was redundant. I hated the concept of the X5M until I drove one, and will probably own one at some point.

Pulling the trigger on an E60 M5 this week though.

i went almost from e60 M5 to x5m -- briefly had a 750xi Sport) but then realized I wasn't 65 so i had to get out of that
Have 2011 x5M with 21 215 rims -- LOVE x5M.. probably faster tan the e60 m5 -- real quick off the start, I literally had mine to 150+

only thing I miss.. AC seats.. and doing some Donuts or drifts

can't go wrong with owning any M car really!
consider yourself blessed to have those tough decisions:)

Many Board members have scored fine looking x5m's and hope they are happy driving a luxury barge.

It makes sense if your household is limited on space for only one or 2-cars.

If not buy a 30-year pick up truck for $1,500 for the mulch and m235i and have money left over as well as a car that can get out of it's own way.

I have a few cars and trucks but the m5 is actually the most comfortable highway cruiser for 4-people.

I drove in a 2010 x6m, nice interior but zero driving satisfaction.

You could not take a corner on MI broken pavement at speed due to massive unsprung weight of wheels loosing contact with road.

It may have 500-hp but it felt like 300 hp in 3600-lb car with the weight this SUV has.

Worst of all was the sound of the engine, it was very crude and agricultural in no way befitting a car in this price range

The 1972 Buick Electra I once owned via $ 1,500 check was more refined then the x6m I drove in plenty of torque and power and only pleasant engine noises to behold under full throttle.
Instant throttle response at any speed.

it got the same 14-mpg as the x6m, it felt more secure in bumpy corner (air ride suspension) and due the low stance and wide track you never felt like getting up on 2-wheels when cornering hard, along with zero side to side head toss on non level 2-lane back roads.

Just another data point of reference.

i had he e39 m5 and the e60 m5
the x5m is 100% faster than both cars... on a track it would give a great run for the money
the e60 needs to rev so high so have any fun -- you need to be on a track to enjoy it

I'm happy with my decision over last 5 years i went through a bunch of cars ( yup and lost money on every one of them)
e39 m5
e60 550i sport
e60 m5
2005 m5
2006 911 conv
2008 x5
2012 750xi Sport

and of course my 1985 cj7

x5m my favorute-- my e60 was cose -- since i had a loaded 6 sp manual with only 18k miles-- thing was mint... but i have 18 month old twins.. and the m5 doesn't cut it for baby's n the back

An opinion is not data.

Please post a 0 to 150 Vbox time.

Or a video

The power to weight ratio does not support your postulate.

Besides with turbo and cats sitting on top of your motor all you are doing is creating a nuclear inferno under the hood.
Stock these are close melt down after 20 seconds of full throttle, a known problem.

Based on above my theory is timing gets pulled by 120 mph

easy there NERD you seem to be taking this rather seriously
thi is a POST started asking about the change of an e60 to a X5m --- i personally have had Both -- yu mentioned you drove an x6 ( so i'll give you a high five)
but to say it feels like it has 300 hp.. Nope!

I bought this truck from another guy that had the f10 competition m5 (2014) and he states in a post that the x5 feels like it pulls harder and feels quicker -- i agree with his statement -- again having owed both

relax! your out to prov a point about what? yu m5 is the best car in the world superman? my god

told you so --- if you were at my house i'd put you in a time out for acting so childish

Autobild Ultimate BMW M Model Track Melee - F10 M5 vs M3 vs 1M vs X6M vs E60 M5

now don't cry:
o surprises about the X6M and X5M as both were roughly equally as fast. What's remarkable however, is that both are faster than the old E60 M5. See the table below for full lap times.

Autobild is not the most reliable source, if you have any knowledge about the magazine. The E60M5 is quicker to 150mph compared to the E7X M series, as ticat has noted. I understand that you own both and that the X5M may feel quicker due to the AWD, DCT and turbo torque but you have to account the extra weight of the SUV and especially wind resistance at high speeds. There are quite a few videos out there of X5Ms vs E60 M5s and if both are stock the M5 is going to pull hard on the X5M at high speeds. Here's an M5 board video of both cars going all out on an airstrip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs3cJ8ubNjA

The E60 M5 is actually faster than the new F85 M5 as well:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSjHik-vT8Q

The M5 considerably quicker around the Nurburgring too - 8:13 for the E60 M5 vs 8:24 for the E71 X6M. I would be curious to see the F85 times on the Nurburgring, I expect it to be closer if not faster than the E60 M5, due to the better transmission and more torque. With the new suspensions, weight distribution and active roll, the modern SUVs can negate the higher center of gravity and the extra weight on a track. Compared to an old model like the E60 M5 at least :) Neither of those are track cars though, so this argument is kind of pointless.

Anyways, both are great cars, but serve a different purpose.

Hey, i'm 100% agreement with you guys... I was making a statement as I felt the x5M 0-150 would be faster -- bc on the hghway.. this thingsmoves sooo easily and gets to 100-120-150 easily! I probably have had my x5m over 120+ more times than the e60 m5 simply bc the x5m gets there faster (in my opinon) i usually Gun it in certain straight ways -- just to have fun.. the brake and back to normal.. I personally eel i do that more often with the x5

I was simply making a statement whe the other gentleman somehow seemed to take it personally and asked me to prove it -- so I went to Goofgle and found an article of where the x5 and x6 were quicker than m5 -- is it 100% accurate/// who knows! if the e60 m5 is quicker.. fine fine me --- however to have a 5,ooo lb SUV being able to keep up with an e60 m5 -- puts a smile on my face everytime.

I 'm blessed to have 18 month old twins!! or i'd still have my e60 m5-- like i said I had loaded car with every option.. 6 sp manual... and only 18k miles on it when i sold it
got a 750 sport (larger thinking about twins) -- wasn't happy with it
then went to x5M -- overall I'm very happy with the truck! I loved my e39 m5... loved my e60 m5, and Love my X5M

anyone who is driving a M model BMW is very blessed -- i'm not here to argue.. but to rather give my opinion to the POST which was asking if he should get rid of e60-- for x5M --- hey if you need to get rid of the m6 - all i'm saying is the x5M is the next best thing )in my opinion)

back to results-- it is nuts that the test had the x5M and x6M faster than e60 m5 -- I was surprised myself --- now put those cars on a different track with different drivers and I'm sure we would have a different result:)
