I just rebuilt my non-LCI-CCC with a wrecked LCI-CCC from Troy Jeup (Thank you very much Troy!) and thought I would post a lot of pictures of the process.
Back story: My CCC started giving me problems about 2 months after I purchased the car (FEB 2014). Problems began with the Bluetooth dropping or not connecting at all. A simple button reset would usually bring the connection back. Soon, this issue escalated into the entire unit rebooting while driving but otherwise worked normally. The next thing to happen was all audio, including gong chimes, stopped with the rebooting. Sometimes I could tap the side of the center dash and the system would reboot which led me to believe something was loose. Final stage, blank screen of death. I have been listening to audio through my iPhone sitting on the dash ever since, not cool.
I searched and searched to find a way to repair this on the cheap and even sent the unit to Scott Johnson (BMW General Module 5 (GMV, ZKE V)) who repairs body modules. He was unable to reflow the solder on a BGA machine due to not being able to remove the fiber on the motherboards transceiver. So the next cheapest option was to procure a used CCC from Troy Jeup. I must have gotten lucky because I PMd him through this site and he gave me an even better/cheaper option. He had a wrecked module that could be used to rebuild my unit and he assured me it booted before he removed it from the car. The unit ended up being from a LCI model which was more appealing to me anyway.
To sum it all up, I swapped the motherboard and the power supply from Troy's unit into mine. I also southern engineered some additional cooling via holes and access ports in the covers, as I've read these things suffer from overheating which may have contributed to the initial failure. I just need to remove the HD radio option from the VO (hopefully) to regain all functionality. Right now everything works except FM/AM selection. It also has the option for HD radio and AUX of which I have neither but ordered the AUX retrofit from eBay and will install it this weekend.
Hope these pictures help someone in the future:
