Rebuild Your CCC (PHOTO HEAVY)

I just rebuilt my non-LCI-CCC with a wrecked LCI-CCC from Troy Jeup (Thank you very much Troy!) and thought I would post a lot of pictures of the process.

Back story: My CCC started giving me problems about 2 months after I purchased the car (FEB 2014). Problems began with the Bluetooth dropping or not connecting at all. A simple button reset would usually bring the connection back. Soon, this issue escalated into the entire unit rebooting while driving but otherwise worked normally. The next thing to happen was all audio, including gong chimes, stopped with the rebooting. Sometimes I could tap the side of the center dash and the system would reboot which led me to believe something was loose. Final stage, blank screen of death. I have been listening to audio through my iPhone sitting on the dash ever since, not cool.

I searched and searched to find a way to repair this on the cheap and even sent the unit to Scott Johnson (BMW General Module 5 (GMV, ZKE V)) who repairs body modules. He was unable to reflow the solder on a BGA machine due to not being able to remove the fiber on the motherboards transceiver. So the next cheapest option was to procure a used CCC from Troy Jeup. I must have gotten lucky because I PMd him through this site and he gave me an even better/cheaper option. He had a wrecked module that could be used to rebuild my unit and he assured me it booted before he removed it from the car. The unit ended up being from a LCI model which was more appealing to me anyway.

To sum it all up, I swapped the motherboard and the power supply from Troy's unit into mine. I also southern engineered some additional cooling via holes and access ports in the covers, as I've read these things suffer from overheating which may have contributed to the initial failure. I just need to remove the HD radio option from the VO (hopefully) to regain all functionality. Right now everything works except FM/AM selection. It also has the option for HD radio and AUX of which I have neither but ordered the AUX retrofit from eBay and will install it this weekend.

Hope these pictures help someone in the future:

Thanks for taking the time to take all of these photos. They could help a lot of us in the future.
No problem guys, I just know how difficult it is to find ANY useful info about CCC repair or replacement. I'm still trying to figure out how to remove the HD radio option from the CCC (I'm assuming this will regain normal FM/AM signals and processing). I see a lot of threads where people are talking about modifying the VO or VIN but I don't see that option for the CCC. All the things I know how to do are changing lines of code from nicht_aktiv to aktiv. If I ever figure it out, I will post it up on this thread.

Thanks again buddy. Glad you are here on the forum helping all of us poor souls. You know, if you happen to have a couple spare 6.0 strokers laying around, I'll help you clean out your shop by taking them off your hands for ya, lol. :)

Hi buddy did you unit come on with the older pre Lci face panel?

I have done the same the unit stays on Bmw logo with pre Lci face panel

And boots up to main menu with Lci face panel

I also used just power board and main boot from Lci ccc
Mine powered up and booted just fine with the pre-LCI faceplate. Just to clarify, my original CCC was pre-LCI and I used the motherboard and power supply from an LCI unit to repair mine. If you did the same, and the faceplate is the only part that allows proper boot, this is truly odd. Be sure to check the ribbon cable seating. Let us know if you ever resolve the issue. Don't forget to code your VO in order to regain all functionality.

That sounds like the voltage regulator.

Okay so this is the only thread that is sort of related to my question. My original almost never used CCC died and i swapped it out for another one that happens to be date coded 2 months apart from mine and the radio knob is very abused to the point of volume control issues and muting. I am wanting to swap the black CD OBT CD/DVD panel to the replacement unit, does this need to be coded or is it just as simple as unplugging the ribbon cable and swaping them? I am also going in to the dealer to have the replacement coded to the car and I would like to do this before going in so i don't have to pay twice
