          BMW 535d

The new BMW 535d Saloon and Touring

Featuring BMW’s award-winning 3.0-litre diesel engine, the all-new BMW 535d offers a first for a BMW diesel car engine – two-stage turbocharging. The new engine delivers a maximum output of 272 bhp and, more importantly, 560 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm, with 500 Nm available at just 1,500 rpm. This propels the new BMW 535d from zero to 62 mph in just 6.6 seconds. To put this into perspective, the current 530d, itself no slouch, produces 218 bhp while the E39 M5 offered 500 Nm of torque.

Two-stage turbocharging resolves the conflict of ‘turbo lag’ when accelerating hard at low engine speed and increases the availability of power at higher engine revs. The first turbocharger provides an almost instant kick of turbo pressure at low engine speeds while the second turbocharger cuts in at higher engine speeds to boost power throughout the higher rev range. The new turbo layout also extends the engine rev range by 500 rpm over the BMW 530d, to a maximum of 4,800 rpm. Even with such performance, exhaust emissions are not compromised, since the 535d has a particulate filter and is fully compliant with EU4 regulations.

Sweeeet! Dieselpower! And i thought my dads V70 D5 with a powerbox (195hp/410Nm) was fast for a diesel. But this one´s a killer! Imagine a Chip in that one, VW 5.0 TDI V10 Performance ?!

Diesel is becoming more and more a serious alternative to Sub-M petrolengines.

Sounds like BMW used a tuned version of the Alpina D10 Bi-turbo engine (245hp/500Nm). Can anyone confirm or deny this?

My dealer (in the Netherlands) gave me the spec sheet last week complete with prices. When you take into consideration the difference in standard equipment the price difference between the 530d and 535d is only 1314 Euro excluding taxes. Amazing value when you get lots more hp (54hp) and torque (60Nm) for that.
The 535d comes standard with 17" wheels, front armrest, split aircon and automatic gearbox. Production starts in September 2004.
If they give me a good price for my D10 I'll probably order one.

My dealer told me that the engine internals for the 535d are the same as for the 530d. At least that was told to his mechanic that attended a BMW course about the 5353d. The only difference is the extra turbo and the electronics ofcourse.
My D10 has upgraded internals compared to the old 530d so I don't think they used the D10 engine in the 535d. Besides the D10 has quite a big turbolag which the 530d and hopefully the 535d don't have.

No, this engine is a new development (based on the 3l diesel engine). The same development direction is propsed by Opel. BMW is the first one to offer such a diesel.

It is even better, you have here an engine with less power then the VW V10 TDI, but the V10 is much heavier. So a BMW with this 3,5l engine has less weight on the front axle and so it much more agil.

You can compare it to the difference between a E320d and E400d from MB. The E320d is more sportive because it has less weight on the steering wheels. So BMW is more sportiv then a Phaeton with V10 TDI.

          The 535d is still a 3,0l engine, not a 3,5l. Specific power is 90,0hp/liter!
