Re: Member cidair's new 545i w/ HUD display!
Thanks for the pics, Gustav. I have a question - Does the HUD only provide Sat Nav info or can it display info from the i-drive controls too (audio, suspension settings, etc.)?

Mille Miglia:
You can select SPEED, NAV, ACC and CHECK CONTROL to be displayed.
There is one thing thatīs a little annoying about it - you have to change the brightness setting, when driving with polarized sunglasses.
It says so in the manual and thatīs confirmed.

Re: Member cidair's new 545i w/ HUD display!
Quick question - Is it any more distracting/annoying at night? My issue is this: Are the symbols and writing ONLY visible, or can you also see the entire "projection" box on the screen? It seems like you'd be able to see more light leakage at night than during the day.
Any chance you could post some pics taken at night?
I'd appreciate it!

Zeke013:
So far Iīve only seen the text and nothing around it. Have driven the car a couple of times in darkness, but didn`t see any light except the text.
Will try to take some pictures later this week.
I read some place that the system also includes a special windscreen.
Maybe itīs because of reflexes etc?

Re: Member cidair's new 545i w/ HUD display!
Windscreen? I'm not sure what that is.
The reason I'm concerned is that the salesman, during my test drive of a non-HUD vehicle threw a magazine up on the dash when I asked him about HUD. The resulting glare caused by the magazine was annoying, to say the least. He said the majority of people who had driven with HUD ended up turning it off based on the glare. That led me to believe that more than just the writing would be visible. But maybe he was wrong.
Photos would be appreciated!

That's very cool! Gotta have it!
Now, where's the missile button for the sidewinders to blast that Volvo out of sight?

No idea were it is.
I had a LOCK ON, but there was something wrong with the distance measuring unit ( 400m ? )

This might help a little. In the November 2003 issue of Automotive Engineering magazine there was an article about the Siemens designed HUD and LCD navigation screens in the e60:
"Both displays use transflective technology, which deflects daylight off the rear of the display, complementing active backlighting and increasing light intensity. In addition, both the center console and headup displays employ sensors to adapt the brightness of the display to current light conditions."
Despite not having seen one in person, I would be inclined to believe that backlight reflection off of the windshield would be less of a problem than entirely backlight designs or even a magazine sitting on the dashboard.

Windshield it is? The glass thing in front of you!
The only thing you see is the symbols and text hovering above your bonnet.
