Anyone surprised the NAV system STILL uses a CD-Rom?

I just read that the 2004 5 series will have a CD-Rom NAV system. Since I own two other cars with a DVD-based NAV system, and have previoulsy owned one with a CD-Rom based NAV system (which stunk), I find BMW's position on this issue surprising. As intensely as they push 'technology' (sometimes just for the sake of techonology - see iDrive) I cannot fathom how they could stick with a CD-Rom NAV system. Is there some other rationale for their desire to stick to the CD-Rom that I am not aware of?

Are you sure about this?

The 2003 model year E39 M5s as well the newer M3s all use a DVD based system.

If it's true it could be that they have a surplus and are fitting them on lesser E60s for the 2004 model year. They'll probably switch to the DVD system for 2005 onwards and the M5 will 100% have the latest NAV system with DVD (or else ).

. . .maybe what I read was wrong. Let me see if I can re-locate the source. I sure hope you're right.

It definately says CD based... but it must be a typo or something.

Also interesting, it says Voice Command also, thought the 5 wasn't supposed to get that?

Well, NAV is not available in the US until March.

What about our friends across the pond? Anyone have NAV yet, or is everyone waiting for the new one to come out in March?

Here is the relevant page from the UK brochure. Note that it is a DVD system for both options 606 and 609. These are not the new M5 but just regular 5 series cars:
