E60 5-series sighting near Palm Springs, CA

        Hi all,

This is probably "not very exciting by now", but I happened to see an E60 530 near Palm Springs this weekend. My wife and I were heading out there to celebrate our one year anniversary (in my E39 M5 ) and on the I-10 East, I saw a powder blue E60 passing me at HIGH SPEED. Of course, I had to catch up with him. ) Anyway, it was a 530 (You could see where they'd taken off the badge) and it was being drivin by a pretty young, pretty happy looking guy. Young by my standards anyway. I think he figured out pretty quickly that I and an M3 that had seen him too were pacing him, but he didn't seem to mind. As much as I always despised the E60 design before, in person, it wasn't as bad as I expected. Nowhere approaching an E39 mind you, but not "Dear God, what were they thinking" ugly. What impressed me most was watching the handling and acceleration of the 530. It appeared that the new engine has some pretty nice real-world handling characteristics. Makes me look forward to the numbers on the E60 M5.

And then I got the surprise of my life. My wife said, "you can trade in this one (the E39) for an E60 M5 when they come out if you want." Wow.

But you know what? I'm not going to. I'll suffer with 400HP and yesterdays body style.

Maybe I'll change my mind when they come out, but I don't think so. I think I've got my '02 E39 for the LONG haul. I just have to get a normal car so I won't put 35K miles per year on the Beast. It's my only driver now, and I'm racking up the miles!

        Darn.
