Next Generation BMW M5 and M6 may come with all-wheel drive!

What, seriosuly?

Did I just read that right....BMW really wants to make AWD M cars?

And try guessing the "real" reason behind this decision by M CEO Dr. Friedrich Nitschke...AMG's 4matic models have been huge success and they are basically missing out on potential sales, so BMW boffins tell them "go ahead, do it now, we need to make out shareholders happy! And disregard any M history, and forget you ever said that M will never have AWD... "

M CEO Dr. Friedrich Nitschke: Ive looked at the numbers and 70 to 80 percent of E63 AMGs are all-wheel drive in the US now.

Thankfully, it won't happen until the next generation of M5/M6 cars arrive, which is set to be around 2017...and I had high hopes that the next generation of M5's won't be a pig, like the F10, and I'd buy it...

Two articles here and here. Enjoy the read, and please post your comments, opinions, and general discussion. I want to see how you guys feel about it and what you think!

Regards,
Aldiyar

Richard Hammond: "Straight away, you can see the problem - Its brilliant. Big 500hp V10, naturally aspirated...Its just distilled essence of single malt driving pleasure."

Jeremy Clarkson: "In M********** mode, this car is pretty hard to describe. But 'perfect' will do for the moment. The M5, I think, may very well be my next car. I absolutely love it."

If I had the money I would mod my e39 to AWD. That would be totallu awesome, at least to me.

I think AWD M5 would be great. This will totally put Audi to pasture. LOL

As long as its an option and not all M5/6's are AWD, whatever, everything is eventually inevitable. But BMW does not match a manual gearbox to any AWD right? So if all were AWD, then I would be upset, cause it would also be the death of the manual gearbox!!!!!

inevitable really. I'll reserve judgement till they release it.
Think about the AWD 911 Turbo, its epic. Nothing wrong with AWD if its done properly in my opinion.

The X5M and the X6M are both AWD so it doesn't seem too unlikely the M5 will follow suit. However they are going to need a lot more HP due to all the extra drag the AWD drivetrain will have over 100mph. I've read the AWD drag on the Gallardo is what gives the E60 M5 the win at speed over 100mph. I'm not an expert though, it's just what I've read?

I think this has a lot do due the the HUGE power output of current ///M cars. Having over 600 rear wheel HP is dangerous and is far better going to all 4 wheels. Plus it will make the 0-60 runs faster with less wheel spin.

If they do AWD right and keep a rear wheel bias like on Porsche AWD then it will work and you will have a hard time knowing it's a AWD car. However if it feels like a Audi, that will just SUCK!
