Proper e60 M5 Operation - Survey

With all the talk about rob bearings, clutches, how long to warm up the motor, when to shift, and what rpm is the best or cruising in a high revving big engine, I thought it might be interesting to see what consensus we might create about operating our cars. I'm curious how you might answer the following... I know the climate you live in matters, so maybe differentiate between summer and winter if it matters where you drive.

1. From a cold start, how long do you warm up the motor before driving away?
2. When the motor is still warming up, (oil NOT at 210), at what RPM do you normally shift gears when just cruising around town?
3. When the motor is warm, (oil at 210), What RPM do you normally shift gears when just cruising around town?
4. What do you mostly run in: P400? P500? Or M mode?
5. How much have you used / do you use the launch feature?
6. How many miles on your original clutch?
7. How many track days has your car seen?
8. How many miles have you got on a set of brake pad? Rotors?
9. How often do you use D mode?

What else do you do, to "properly" operate your car?

I'm curious how you might answer the following... I know the climate you live in matters, so maybe differentiate between summer and winter if it matters where you drive.

1. From a cold start, how long do you warm up the motor before driving away?
I let the idle settle down then drive off.
2. When the motor is still warming up, (oil NOT at 210), at what RPM do you normally shift gears when just cruising around town?
I gradually escalate the rpm beginning at 2000 rpm with the shift from first to second when leaving the neighborhood. Ex. 2000 rpm 1st
to 2nd gear, 2500 second to 3rd, 3000 3rd to 4th, etc. until the car is warm.

3. When the motor is warm, (oil at 210), What RPM do you normally shift gears when just cruising around town?
Rather situational...I generally rev at 6000-8000 rpm as a general practice. I use the car.
4. What do you mostly run in: P400? P500? Or M mode?
M mode...P500Sport, S5 or S6, Sport Suspension/Diff setting. I don't even back out of the garage in P400.
5. How much have you used / do you use the launch feature?
Never
6. How many miles on your original clutch?
70xxx. The clutch is in the process of being changed as I type this.
7. How many track days has your car seen?
15-20 plus another 20, "spirited drives" with the car club. (We aren't playing around on the drive!)
8. How many miles have you got on a set of brake pad? Rotors?
About 15K on the fronts and 20K on the rears.
9. How often do you use D mode?
I'm not familiar with this..."D mode". J/K my wife has driven the car 2 or 3 times always in D mode.

What else do you do, to "properly" operate your car?
I drive the crap out of the car and make sure it is properly inspected, serviced, and cared for at all times. I perform oil changes every 5K miles and inspect the undercarriage each time it's on a lift.

I just saw Mighty5 also discussed his shifting habits so I will add mine, as well. I grab every gear going down and since my clutch lasted 70K+ miles, I don't think that there was an adverse reaction to my driving style. I was taught to hit every gear up and down when I learned to drive a 3 pedal car and I've continued the habit on the SMG.

I hope this helps.
Cheers-Milton

Maybe add "Current Mileage?" and any "engine related mods"? and "oil type and change interval" Just a thought.

1. From a cold start, how long do you warm up the motor before driving away? About 30 secs
2. When the motor is still warming up, (oil NOT at 210), at what RPM do you normally shift gears when just cruising around town? On my old engine, I didn't pay attention and probably shifted in all sorts of rpm ranges. With the replaced used engine (I shift before 4K).
3. When the motor is warm, (oil at 210), What RPM do you normally shift gears when just cruising around town? Around 4K
4. What do you mostly run in: P400? P500? Or M mode? P500
5. How much have you used / do you use the launch feature? Only twice after I got the Euro LC but I bought my car used with 10K miles on it back in 2007 and not sure how many times the previous owner used LC.
6. How many miles on your original clutch? My original clutch was replaced at 52K miles due to an intermittent red cog that would appear during cold start and disappear after a few secs.
7. How many track days has your car seen? None except a Car Control Clinic with BMWCCA where we practiced braking, slalom and skid pad
8. How many miles have you got on a set of brake pad? Rotors? About 11K miles on my current Brembo pads. I think 65K miles on the rotors
9. How often do you use D mode? Never

Additional info:
10. Oil changed every 7500 miles with BMW Castrol TSW 10W-60 oil.
11. Engine broke down from spun rod bearings at 88.5K miles.
12. Replacement motor has 15K miles.
13. Mods are in my signature.

1. From a cold start, how long do you warm up the motor before driving away? Until the Rpm's settle around 700 or so.
2. When the motor is still warming up, (oil NOT at 210), at what RPM do you normally shift gears when just cruising around town? I always shift at around 3k when engine is still cold
3. When the motor is warm, (oil at 210), What RPM do you normally shift gears when just cruising around town? When there are cops around under 3k when there is no cops depends on my mood.
4. What do you mostly run in: P400? P500? Or M mode? Im always set to P500 dsc off sport everything but i dont use the M button unless im going to do some real driving.
5. How much have you used / do you use the launch feature? No i never use the launch feature
6. How many miles on your original clutch? I had 42k on my original clutch at that point the SMG took a dive on me luckily i was still within CPO so to the tune of 15k the dealership replaced my Entire SMG with a brand spanking new one.
7. How many track days has your car seen? None
8. How many miles have you got on a set of brake pad? Rotors? Havent had to change them yet as they were just changed when i aquired my car
9. How often do you use D mode? Never! lol

What else do you do, to "properly" operate your car? I have an SMG so when i come to any stop i always put my car in neutral and then back into gear when im ready to go again. The reason is i want to prevent clutch wear by not allowing the SMG to down shift from 7,5,3,2,1. so far its fine no issues car runs like a boss.

1. From a cold start, how long do you warm up the motor before driving away?

Yeah, I usually let the car sit for about 10-15 minutes warming up, basically as soon as cold start is done and RPM's fall below 1k I slowly drive off, without any revving and shifting as low as possible.

2. When the motor is still warming up, (oil NOT at 210), at what RPM do you normally shift gears when just cruising around town?

I try to shift early, may be 2.5-3.5k rpm, despite the fact that my smg clearly doesn't like that - blinking gear indicator...

3. When the motor is warm, (oil at 210), What RPM do you normally shift gears when just cruising around town?

First of all, I never just 'cruise' in town and I generally hate driving slow. Moreover, it constantly pisses me off how other drivers in Boston are driving like they are half asleep at the wheel or they just can't drive. Hence, I shift at 8600 RPM (Evolve-R Stage 2 Remap) quite often, at least 15-20 times per day

4. What do you mostly run in: P400? P500? Or M mode?

Honestly, I find myself in M-mode as soon as the engine warms up to full operating temperature. For me, M-mode is set at P500S, DSC OFF, EDC Comfort (Horrible roads in Boston) and of course SMG in manual S6

5. How much have you used / do you use the launch feature?

I've used LC about 5-7 times since I purchased the M5 on the 15th of March 2013, so almost 6 months ago! However, I did have to change the clutch/flywheel and have not done any launches since then!

6. How many miles on your original clutch?

My original clutch/flywheel crapped out on me after 38000 miles, of which only 5000 where my miles + 5-7 LC starts! New clutch should last at least another 30k (Fingers crossed!)

7. How many track days has your car seen?

Unfortunately, my car has not seen a single track day...

8. How many miles have you got on a set of brake pad? Rotors?

When I bought my car at 33000 miles, the stealership replaced all four rotors and brake pads as part of the deal (Also got a set of new tires). So fast forward 6 months and right now I have driven about 7000 miles on these parts without problems.

9. How often do you use D mode?

Honestly, I don't like D mode and never use it!

What else do you do, to "properly" operate your car?

Taking good care of the M is vital for her longevity, so I am following my own maintenance schedule. Unfortunately, I have no idea how the car was treated by the two previous owners and the 33k miles they drove, but I am assuming they followed the blind BMW-recommended schedule!

When I bought the car in March, as part of the deal I had all fluids changed (engine oil/filter, smg trans, rear diff fluid, brake fluid flush), and also they changed the filters and as mentioned above I had new rotors/pads installed. Since this 'major' service, I had another oil change done at 38k miles while the car was getting a new clutch/flywheel and going to change the spark plugs in when I hit 40k miles (should have done it much earlier, I know I know...)

Our airfield events are completely safe based on years of experience, we conduct them during clear visibility with mature participants that have several years of experience with high-performance automobiles, large unobstructed run-off zones on sealed off private former military airbases and we clearly mark the braking zones. If inexperienced with high speed driving we do not recommend organizing your own event but attending a high-performance driving school.
