E65 quirk

One particularly 'amusing' story is about the technologically advanced new Series 7 (E65). The price is about US$200,000 in Jakarta due to the duties.

I read on the internet about this E65 quirk which perhaps was never part of the design considerations.

In Jakarta, Indonesia, particularly after the economic crash that has not recovered fully yet, there are more street crimes. The common ones are people, under your very nose, trying to steal wheel covers, radio aerials or exterior mirrors while a car is stationary at a red light.

It is very annoying but there is little one can do at this level of poverty.

This case a brand new E65 was waiting at the red light while a few young thugs remove the exterior mirrors using an iron lever.

You know what happened? The car was short circuited and the whole system failed to operate. The engine could not be started, the door could not be unlocked, the electric windows got stuck, the airconditioning stopped working. Even the communication pack was totally dead. Imagine being baked inside by the tropical sun while the temperature outside was some 35 centigrade during the day.

Fortunately there was a mobile phone inside so the driver called BMW Road assistance. The people at BMW was insisting the password which the driver did not remember.

After an hour being baked, the road assistance team arrived and rescued the driver and passengers....

Well BMW had not thought of everything have they?

See, this is what happens when you let computers dominate over mechanical parts. Always have a mechanical fail-safe. The E65 is one giant computer. For the top-of-the-line to be rendered useless by a bunch of thugs with a crowbar is a shame for BMW.

Can you imagine how angry the passengers were when the BMW operator was asking for the correct password and nobody could remember it because they are being evenly braised inside a leather-lined oven?
