The SMG had disengaged because you were going too slow. If you had hit the brakes it would have held for you a second while you reapplied gas. Instead you revved it up and it slammed into gear.
I had similar experiences when I first got my SMG. Once I learned how to use it, I have no issue.

I can see why you and others feel this way, but once you get the hang of it, you like it.
The only thing that bothers me is the D mode gear selection - the 2-3 shift always comes too early. So I just drive in S most of the time - problem solved.
