The RS is an amazing car on the track and the M5 is a great street ride so you truly do have the best of both worlds.
As the articles written on the new F10, if we believed the articles we would have all bought CTS-V's. It consistently came out on top in "comparison" tests, but everyone here bought the E60.
I don't know, I've read plenty of articles that say the E60 was the superior car despite the CTS having a few tenths on it in the straights. Also seen the opposite, I guess either way it's up to you and what you want in a car. Always have to drive it to know for sure.
BMW made a huge mistake by not using an evolved version of the S85. There's just nothing special about the 4.4 aside from the huge low rpm torque it puts out thanks to the TT's. Leave the fuel economy to the rest of their lineup. The M division is about zero compromises and putting in a souped up 550i engine in it was a bad move - the exclusivity is gone.
I'm going to say something fairly unpopular - it's simply my opinion and not directed at anyone in particular: if BMW offered up the choice of a free F10 to existing E60 owners, the vast majority would take the F10. Simply because it's newer (and as a result more "prestigious"/exclusive) has more power, is faster in a straight line etc. etc. Fact of the matter is that many (possibly most) current E60 M5 owners can't comfortably afford (or don't want to pay for) a new M5 (let's be honest and admit that few on this board bought our cars for anything close to MSRP), so often resort to bashing the newcomer. In 5-7 years time the E60 section of this board will be crammed full of even more younguns who bought an E60 for next-to-nothing (almost already the case for early models, relative to the car's original MSRP), and interest in the older model will wane further still, and we'll see far more traffic on the F10 board. At that point a similar conversation will take place when BMW unveil their latest gen M5 with, say AWD and more turbos, and a whole bunch of F10 owners will swear that they'll never buy one, as the F10 M5 was the last true M5...
Don't get me wrong -I love the E60 M5, but wouldn't say no to the latest/greatest from Munich if money were no issue. Fact of the matter is that I don't want to pay $100K for a car that might be worth $50-60K in 3 years time, and which doesn't offer ~$30K more "performance" (which I'm defining broadly) than the car I'm driving currently.
Oh, and don't forget that Top Gear loves the new M5. While I couldn't care less what C&D says, I do pay attention to the boys from a "proper" motoring magazine.
Let the flaming begin...
FREE you said it !..... If it was a free car who would say no ? And who cares what top gear has to say ? They also talked **** about the E60 when it came out. Did that stop you from getting the E60 ? I can buy just about any car i want, And like i said this new M5 is just a 550i. Thats my take on it from how i drove it . My 08 M5 came home with 46 miles on the clock and today has 19k i paid sticker. also paid cash but thats just me. What car do you know of that holds its value for 3 years ? kids will always be kids...
this thread is going nowhere. e39 drivers were saying same thing when e60 was released. Face the reality BMW is not the same and the cars are going to get bigger and bigger. If you want the latest and newest design get the f10 if you want just performance then you are buying the wrong car. but we can say this with any car company. my biggest complaint would be the TT. i understand fuel economy is important but i think most of us dont give a crap about fuel if we bought an M car

Couldn't agree more about fuel economy in ///M cars (as stated in my post above). Create a 1 series diesel that gets 55 mpg to get the fleet average where it is supposed to be.

Agree 100%. One thing I guess that really gets me down is looking at the new M5 and seeing the slow decline of BMW in the future. The F30 is lighter than the E9X so that's a start, but their eco initiative is starting to worry me. I have no problem with diesel models of the regular cars, they're great. Hell, even build the i Series. But don't give me eco-focused M cars. Please. I know it will happen, but I guess I was hoping it might take a bit longer. The F10 M5 is a great car, but I'll take an E60 any day.

I predict the next gen M5 will be a 3-liter, inline 6 with 6 turbochargers, fitted with AWD. It'll be heavy, but folks will be lining up to buy one. The one after that will be fitted with 2-liter 4 banger with 8 turbos, also AWD and diesel. The one after that will run on some combination of electricity and alternate fuel, and emit only synthesized sound.

I think this is where the future of BMW may be headed if you are correct. 680Hp to the WHEEL from a 1.8L 4 Cyl engine that is turbocharged and supercharged at the same time. Would anybody turn this engine down only because it doesn't have the roar of a V10?! I don't know if I would! This is crazy though! LOL!
"You can't make an E60 M5 like this no matter what you do. I don't mean that in a negative way. It is just a completely different type of car."
