Correct. OEM exhaust is cut off just before the muffler using a sawzall or preferably something more precise.
New exhaust has slightly larger diameter pipe, which fits over the remaining factory exhaust (overlaps by a few inches) and gets clamped.
If you need replace OEM exhaust, unclamp, slide off aftermarket muffler, put OEM back where it used to go and use the clamp to connect. I've heard that you should use some form of exhaust tape before clamping to ensure there are no leaks, since when you put the OEM back on there won't by any overlap.
