M5 Quarter Mile Runs @ Milan Dragway

So I've been wanting to go to the drag strip since I was 16.. 22 years later I made it this last Friday with my 06 M5. After copious screw ups I finally got in 3 runs and posted times I was happy with given my newbie status. There was a new 650 there that night as well that was doing very impressive 12.8s. Anyway, here's my slips and my vids. As you can see I was clueless on hand placement once I launched which I need to work on. FYI both runs are using the 4.1k launch control.

I got a recurrent 'engine malfunction, reduced power' on every run which I think is my fuel pump going bad. The 12.70 run would have been much better without the diminished redline.

Run 2 I failed

On run 3 the large piece covering the bottom of the engine started to fall off so I had to stop. Will be back for more practice. Am going to take the wife's 08 Shelby soon as well to see how it performs against the M5.

Congrats on making it to the strip. However, I have to ask: why would you continue to run after getting the first "engine malfunction" warning? Things that like that should be checked immediately.

How did you get your "4.1k" launch control? Assuming this is a Euro Spec launch control, it should shift for you assuming you executed it correctly. I say this because you appeared to be initiating the shifts rather than letting the car do it.

As for your hand placement - it should be typical 9 and 3 (or 10 and 2) so you can use the paddles as they were designed. This just also happens to be the best in terms of having quick control of the car. Not only is the hand at the top of the steering wheel a poor placement in terms of car control, but if your airbag goes off it will throw your hand into your face, which will hurt (though in this case you have a helmet on, so only your hand will hurt). For some humor (no insult intended):

I wish it mattered. I've had this problem for a few months now and since BMW isn't convinced of what it is I don't feel like dumping money into guessing. They're pretty sure it's the fuel pump and I've had it checked 2+ times so when it dies I'll get it replaced.

Have not had luck with the car doing it even with the patch. Have tested multiple times to redline. For the sake of safety here I'm just doing it.

Haha, was fully cognizant of this ahead of time but in the heat of the moment my hands went into spaz mode. I don't remember them doing this until I saw the video.

Thinking about it now the car could be canceling the launch control function because of the ongoing error code present on the car. At least that's one possibility that jumped to my mind.

I read/cleared the errors before each run so don't think that's it.

Nice 60' and 1/8th. But what happened to the trap speed in the 1/4? Looks like you were off the gas a little early...usually a 89mph trap in the 1/8 gives me a 115 in the 1/4

I think you'll have a hard time beating the m5 with the Shelby. With all of that torque/weight/ and short gearing its hard to launch those without a set of drag radials. My best 1/8 in my boss 302 was 8.1 @ 89 mph and my z4m was 8.00 @ 92 mph with a 50 shot
