Almost succeeded - can't remove SZL

Hey guys,
I love the posts and the photos for your M5 SZL module/sensor repairs. Had this been available when I had my catastrophic electronics failure, it would've saved me $1200 about 3 years ago. I've started having Active Steering problems, and DSC warning lights come on peridically, and more frequently now, about every other day. REcently had an indy mech changed a battery due to other reasons, SMG pump replacement and brake vacuum pump replacement.

Found this and thought I'd give it a try, even though I have a 2005 545i. I got as far as taking all the screws out of the SMZ module, but couldn't lift the darn thing out of the column!! It looks slightly different from all the pics (of course), so I tried just about everything to wiggle that thing out, so I could open up the interior piece to see the goop to clean off...

Since it wouldn't lift out after all the screws came out (wondered if they glued the da*n thing in), I tried to open it up along the circular plastic piece, with all of its plastic tabs. I managed to break one (there's about 6 of them all the way around in the worst locations), and had to stop and put the whole thing back together again, as it's my DD and it was getting late.

What I noticed - it is very WET/oily inside the SMZ module. I HAVE to get inside to clean it, but I cannot figure out how to get the module lifted out!!

Anyone have more clues? I'll try again next weekend to see what I may have missed today - will certainly start earlier on a Saturday morning instead of a Sunday afternoon!

thanks in advance!

You must not have got all the clips or screws. Mine came apart quite easily. I'd be surprised if yours was glued.

BTW, a year and a half later, I'm still SZL error free. The cleaning was a fix for me.

Thanks - I'll keep looking. I even took out extra screws that weren't mentioned earlier. Now that I can get that airbag and steering wheel off, it should take much less time up front, so I can take photos along the way of where I'm running into problems.

When I try to get the top of the circular module to open up, there's this liquid stuff coming out of it like a yellowish oil... just gotta get the thing out to clean it...

I can hardly wait til Saturday morning, but hoping I don't royally screw it up!

This one isn't mind, but it looks exactly like this one I found on Ebay - seems like the seller had rotated the spring catch to the left side, as mine is horizontal across the top instead...

there's hope, because someone got this thing out!

I think I may be suffering with this fault too, but im not 100% sure.

My car will randomly and periodically just not accelerate at all, and the DSC light flashes at me while the car falls flat on its face. It's normally after ive been to fill up the car with fuel and pulled out of the station, but sometimes it does seem to occur just whenever; But I do seem to notice it more after I drive the car, shut it off for a while, and then pull out of wherever ive shut it off and try to get up to speed again.

One other thing its doing is not holding speed on the cruise control. This seems directly related to how fast im going / how much engine power is required.

For E.g I set cruise at 50mph and its fine forever.

I set cruise control to 75mph and its fine until i hit an uphill, then it shuts off

I set cruise control to 95mph (for testing) and it shuts off straight away.

not lights, no errors here, the cruise control just cancels itself completely. It seems that when the car needs to give strong throttle to maintain speed, the cruise cancels.

Any thoughts guys?

Argh, I just put everything back together after cleaning... though my disc had no residue or gunk and looked new. Connected the battery, started the car up, the Engine and Brake lights were still on, turned left and right..... and the lights remained on. I decided to turn the engine off and let it sit for a minute before trying it again, but the lights remained on after the second attempt. I'll try it again in a little while longer, but it's not looking promising. Do you guys think that I will need to replace the module?

Hey guys. Just read through all 6 pages. Car in question is my 2008 550i m-sport. I have what seems to be a steering angle sensor problem

1) DSC light on
2) BRAKE light on
3) TPMS light on (this could be a serperate issue though)
4) start off assistance inactive
5) cruise control not working

BUT

All of the turn signals and high beam and adaptive lightning options still work just fine. So would this still be a steering sensor problem. I noticed that on a cold start there are no lights on the car. And i could throw it in drive or reverse and move forward and the lights stay off. BUT AS SOON as I turn the steering wheel...boom, all lights are on.

Does this sound like the steering angle sesor problem?

.

I cleaned everything and it kept coming back. It turned out to be the bank2 throttle actuator... i think it's about 2k+ to RR.
