Transmission Malfunction Message????

Hi all... Just got around to joining the board. Picked up an 06 M5 a few months back and everything was working fine. Only mods ive done so far are H&R Springs,21" wheels and a minor audio system. Just recently i got a Transmission Malfunction error so i took the car in to get it checked out. They don't know the exact problem but the Dealer just called and suggested that i change the smg pump for $5500 and then if that doesn't solve the problem, they are going to change the clutch and flywheel for another $5500. Anyone else on here every have to deal with this issue and have any advice? Thanks

I believe the SMG pump is a recall item for 2006's. Shouldn't they fix that for free?

Just hit 60K miles so vehicle is out of warranty. I wasnt aware that there was a recall on the smg pumps for the 06s though.. If so, they should replace that whatever the mileage right?

I'm not sure how recalls work for out of warranty cars...

Here are the recall numbers I am aware of for 2006 cars.
(I don't know what 2 and 3 are), but you should make sure the others
get done.

1. SIB # 11-10-05 S85 VANOS Line Replace (up to 11/22/05 production)
2. SIB # 34-05-06 Check SZL Optical Element (from 8/26/05 to 7/28/06)
3. SIB DME Programming (I saw multiple recalls on this)
4. SIB # 23-01-07 SMG hydrolic Motor replace

Now that is some real wishful thinking. It's hard enough to get BMW to replace anything even if it is within the warranty period, at least that is the way my local stealer works. If I were you I would be shopping for a extended warranty.

Wow!!!
The dealer you have just been at needs to get some proper training at BMW.
I have never heard such a lot of crap.
So what, if those don't work, will he also suggest that you buy a new car?
Don't accept this kind of behavior and tell them that you will report them at the BMW headquarters.
They are obliged to fix it and charge you only what needs to be replaced, not ask you to buy different things to put on the car and bare the costs.
This is a top line model and you should demand top service!

The dealer should be able to pinpoint the problem that needs to be fixed for that amount of money.

Considering they both cost the same, you should make your dealer (in writing) guarantee you that you spending $5500 to replace the pump will fix the problem, and if it doesn't, THEY will pay the other $5500 to replace the clutch. Another way to look at it, is that if you pay the 5500 for the pump and it's not the issue, then they re-imburse you for making you do a useless replacement, and then you pay the $5500 for the clutch.

The whole point here is you are out no more than 5500.

The M5 is my dad's - but I drive it more than he does!
