Just Bought an 06 M5, what to look out for

Just a little backround info, I just sold my Supercharged E46 M3 below for a 06 M5... i haven't picked up the M5 yet. I am going to snag it next weekend...

I am a very hands on person with my cars, having done ALL the work on my m3 including the supercharger install and changing the SMG clutch.. So any little issues i dont care about having to fix on my own. The car will probably never see a dealer unless its something catastropic...

The 06 M5 i bought has 68k on the clock right now, and obviously is an another SMG car...

What should i look out for?

How reliable have the motors been on these cars (i know of the obvious SMG troubles)
No major Vanos problems?

Pics of my M3 are below

Welcome to board. You are going to love the M5. Lucky for you, your M3 was SMG so no worries. By the way, nice M3 what kind of supercharger did you have? You'll miss the nimbleness of the M3 and the overall feel of being one with the car. The M5 is a little too big and you'll notice that especially coming from E46 M3. But you'll get used to it since the M5 hides its mass really well. It is a lovely car and the engine is a masterpiece. To me, it feels just as raw as the S54, and then some. The power, luxury, ride and features just blow the M3 away (I still love the M3!!). The V10 is very reliable. The car itself with all the electronics which could could fail overtime, warrants an aftermarket warranty for piece of mind. So think about getting one before the BMW warranty runs out.

As for recalls or issues, mostly the early M5 with 2005 production dates had the issues, such as VANOS, steering angle issues (not sure what it was). As for SMG pump/motor failure, it is just the luck of the draw. You'll see mostly 2006 M5 with problems and a few 2007 for sure. But overall, I would not worry about them. As long as the car has had all the issues addressed by the dealer, then it won't be any issue. Call your service advisor and give him the VIN number and get service history. If there are any open recalls/campaigns, then they will take car of it as long as the car is still under factory warranty which it should be. It goes without saying, if the car has been taken care of by the previous owner, it will be just fine. With higher mileage, obviously other things may need to be replaced but that goes for any car. The M5 is no exception. Enjoy the car.

Welcome aboard! I purchased a 2006 M5 in July and was curious about the same things. You will absolutely love this car. Here is what I have "addressed", all of which are very minor:

Slight virbration/rattle noise from BC button on turn signal stock only on certain pavement - like grooved pavement. (Dealer replaced it)
I-drive delaying or not immediately responding to input. (Dealer upgraded to newer software version)
Slight squeak over bumps coming from rear door area. (Dealer adds special tape to address)

Knock on wood I have had no serious issues and I will be purchasing an extended warranty. I have driven the car the way it was meant to be driven and tracked it last weekend at Infineon for two days. Threw everything I could at the car/track and it performed great, then drove home like a luxury car . Enjoy!

Nice M3. I've had my 06 M5 about a month and it has 52k on the odometer now. I too like to maintain my own vehicles but the trouble with the M5 is there is no factory repair manual or any repair manual that I know of available. It seems the concensus on this board is that if a real problem comes up even the dealer has to rely on factory reps to solve the problem. I bought a laptop and loaded it with OBDII software, but don't really know if that is going to be much help with the M5. I found a couple of internet sites that offer repair info for a fee, but have not subscribed yet. I haven't even got around to putting the M5 on my lift to snoop around yet. Where are you going to get the repair procedures from if you don't mind me asking. Does the M3 have a repair manual that would at least cover the SMG tranny? Maybe we can help each other out.
