2006 vs. 2007 m5 ??

Hey Guys

currently have 02 m5 and thinking about purchasing the newer model m5 (or 2008 550i)
from reading some 2006 M's seem perfect while others have issues. Any argument for buying a 2007 instead of a 2006? price seems to be about 8-10k higher... which i would then have to wait about 4 months to save up some more money (at least how i have to justify buying one)
also CPO warranty - an 07 will have some months left, worth big $ to extend it

or should i simply get an 08 550i and not have to worry

thanks
bob

Yeah tough one between a 2006 and a 2007. I also was in between buying a 2008 500i and and a 2006 M5. So far I thank myself everyday that I bought the 06 M5 instead. The only thing that I wish my car had was the LED LCI Tail Lights. But I will get that upgrade in time. The M5 is sooooooooo much better than the 550i. As far as an 06 or an 07. I got the extended warranty with my 06 and it costed about the same as if I would have got an 07 without an extended warranty. Just pick one that has all the options you want and most importantly the color that you want. Oh and if you get an 07 it's way more likely to have an Ipod unit installed.

Yeah I got it from BMW. I bought my car about 5 months ago. I basically got the 6 year/100,000 warranty, with the 75,000 mile maintenance plan and an extra lifetime replacement plan for my tires, all for about $8,000. Worth the peace of mind, definitely.

As long as all the factory updates and repairs have been maintained, there is really no major mechanical differences at all in any of the E60 M5's. Updates have corrected any first model grimlens if done properly. Color, options, and price is all it comes down to after that. I think the 2006's are one of the best buys in any car out right now. I would get an extended warranty with either!!

I have been debating between an '06 vs '07(or later) Beast.
The tranny issues with the '06 have me a bit concerned, however, it sounds as if BMW is getting that sorted.

Good luck on whatever one you decide to purchase!

at times I wish I had the low end tq of say an E39 m5 or 550i, but at those times, I simply roll down my windows, hit power, and put it in S6 and then i simply ask myself...what torque? as I listen to my eisenmann race.

Get an M5 or you'll regret getting the 550i trust me. as for 06 or 07, no major changes, get which ever you want.

Bob,

If you do a lot of commuting, I would seriously give an 08 550i a lot of thought versus an 06 M5. Obviously, at the outer performance edge the M5 will be more entertaining to drive and considerably faster after 100 mph. However, in day to day life, I would dare to say the 550i is more livable and enjoyable. I also prefer the Steptronic transmission over SMG any day of the work week. The main thing that disappointed me with the e60 m5 was that I had to drive the crap out of it to have fun and make it perform.

If it is important to have the M-badge then the choice is simple. I would choose a 2007 versus a 2006, since the prices are similar and most of the bugs have been worked out in 2007. However, if I was to do it again, I would go for an updated 2008 or newer m5 with a manual transmission. No more SMG for me

However, a 550 with sport package is a very nice car as well. Also, a 2008 550i will have 2 more years of free maintenance and warranty over a comparably priced 06 m5.

Good luck with your decision!

That's been my experience, having owned both. You will never regret getting the M5.

As long as you find a pre-owned E60 M5 with a solid service history you won't have anything to worry about ... no matter the model year.
