Service '08 M5

So, I took in my beast in for service today. It was a slew of things,

1. My windshield has a leak, water seeps in by the driver side "A" pillar.
2. Peeling steering wheel. (Will fix on good deed, but not covered by warranty)
3. Slow responding iDrive. (SA said it may need an update)
4. Blown fuse for cig. lighter. (not covered by warranty, but will fix NC)
5. **(main concern) Brakes rubbing, groan noise.
6. **(main concern) Fan sounds loose, when at full blast makes loud noise.

So, I dropped it off at about 9:00 a.m. pacific time. I was hopping against hope, to be able to pick it up today.
My SA called me today at about 4:00 p.m., said it would be about 2 more days because there maybe a software update for my car.
Said that the software update takes approximately 9-12 hours!!!
Is that normal, for the software update.
At the moment, I am driving a 325 station wagon! lol
in any case, anyone heard of this?

It takes anything from 4 hours up, they don't sit next to the car all this time but just keep tabs on whats going on and answer any questions the computer throws up... BUT it is quite unstable and can crash meaning starting again so sometimes can take a few days but its not the rule.

Why would the steering wheel peel not be under warranty?

Ok.
So I get the software update dilema.
The question I have now is, how would I know if they "ACTUALLY" updated the software.
Truly, I don't trust people all that much, that is part of the reason I ask questions and love this board.
People have great opinions which help novices like me make calculated/educated decisions in addition to research.

I miss my "blue"
